Percha Dam State Park Camping Guide Continued
The 30 developed campsites are spacious, shady, and serene, and most are close enough to hear the river, even when its view is blocked by trees. The park has no designated hiking trails, just paths leading to favorite fishing and bird-watching spots, but a very pleasant walk of a mile or so can be had along the park's dirt roads.

Percha Dam State Park may well be the greatest hidden treasure of the New Mexico State Park system. Virtually unknown (although word is getting out), it is a quiet and serene get-away under the shade of tall trees. The area is covered with a blanket of grass protected by cottonwood, salt cedar and Russian olive trees. The park provides excellent fishing and bird watching along the river. At an elevation of 4,100 feet, this park covers 80 acres of land and 11,500 acres of lake. The park itself is covered with a blanket of grass protected by cottonwood, salt cedar and Russian olive trees. The park provides excellent fishing and bird watching along the river.
One of the 5 top birding sites in New Mexico, Percha Dam State Park is particularly bird-active during spring and autumn migration seasons. Join us every spring for Migration Sensation, a celebration of birds and birding.
Recreational opportunities include camping, picnicking, and fishing. Park visitors can also enjoy swimming and sunbathing. Trails provide hiking opportunities along the river.
Cottonwood and velvet ash trees shelter park visitors from the southern New Mexico sun. Visitors fish and swim to the backdrop of the Rio Grande.
