City of Rocks State Park Camping Guide

At least fifty thousand people a year visit southwest New Mexico's City of Rocks State Park, located about mid-way between Deming and Silver City. Formed of volcanic ash 30 million years ago and sculpted by wind and water into rows of monolithic blocks, City of Rocks State Park in Faywood (near Deming) takes its name from these incredible rock formations. Cactus gardens and hiking trails add to this unique destination. The rock formations at the park are so unique that they are only known to exist in six other places in the world. Imaginative visitors may see the rock formations as a small city, complete with houses, chimneys, courtyards, and streets.

City of Rocks is extraordinary. We stayed there in February 2016 in the electric loop in our 24' Chinook Destiny. The site was level (no blocks needed) and very clean. The primitive campsites among the rocks in the Pegasus campground looked like the coolest spots ever. One group of campers used the tall rocks at their site to show a "drive-in" movie one night (the sound of which was not detectable to other campers.) The hike around the Hydra trail was easy and peaceful. The restrooms and free showers were clean and adequate. There is a little garden area just outside the visitor center with stocked bird feeders, wildlife water fonts, and benches, which is a lovely little area to sit quietly and observe nature. We saw rabbits, quail, finches, and great horned owls. The sunsets are unparalleled, and the night sky offers spectacular star-gazing.
