Beacon Rock State Park Overview
Beacon Rock State Park campground offers 26 first-come first-serve campsites in a wooded setting smack dab in the middle of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. There’s also 9,500 feet of Columbia River shoreline and 26 miles of roads and trails perfect for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.
Campsites are best suited for tents and small RVs. A few campsites will accommodates RVs over 20 feet. Woodard Creek Campground (also in the Park) has 5 full hook sites. One group campsite (200 people) is also available. All campsites at the Park are first-come, first-serve. Check in is 2:30pm add checkout is 1:00pm. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers.
There are also 2 equestrian campsites located over at the equestrian trailhead. The parks equestrian campsite, located at the equestrian trailhead, feature two standard sites that will accommodate a horse trailer each. A hi-line for horses, livestock, water, and vault toilet are available.
Beacon Rock State Park – Area Recreation
Beacon Rock has some pretty sweet technical rock climbing routes and also a mile-long trail up to the top. But hold your horses – check with the Ranger as the technical climbing routes may be close to protect the nesting Peregrine Falcons. The routes usually open back up in July when the little fellas have hatched and flown away at supersonic speeds (they are one of the fastest, if not the fastest birds on the planet).
Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Columbia River Gorge. The park also has over 9,500 feet of freshwater shoreline on the Columbia River. In addition to the park, outdoor activities include camping, biking, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, boating, fishing and wildlife viewing.

We visited here in June 2014 in our 24′ Chinook Destiny RV. There are only 5 sites with full RV hookups, and they are non-reservable. This campground is (now) connected by a trail to the main campground/park. The RV park is directly adjacent to the railroad tracks, and the trains run day/night — they will be loud. This is also tick country, so plan accordingly. All that being said, we loved this park. The pier, large picnic area, nice restrooms, and a 1-mile paved loop trail are easily accessible from the RV campground. There are several other hikes accessible from the main campground. If you’re RVing, you’ll have to add the mileage to the campground onto your hike or drive a separate vehicle up to the parking lot (don’t forget your Discover Pass if so!) The hike up to the top of Beacon Rock is a classic, with part of the trail made of switchback boardwalks. Pool of the Winds is not to be missed, either. The wildlife we saw included blue herons, mergansers, osprey, bald eagles, beaver, ducks, and garter snakes.
I gave this park 4 stars due to the train noise and limited RV sites.
Just an FYI – Your camp reservation at a WA State Park means you don’t need a Discover Pass. Just make sure you campground pass is visible.
Sites are small and Tent use mostly, Bath house has a single shower attached with a fee of .50 for 3 minutes, Some sites are close others spread out. Heavy Park Ranger Patrol (hourly) No fires currently because of Fire hazard. $10 a day for extra vehicle, discovery pass do NOT count for second vehicle fee. Water access is about 1 mile away and will require driving to entrance. Site was clean and taken care of. We had a busy weekend (Mid-August) all sites where full. Reservations are now available and very few FCFS spots. Small General type store about 3 miles away for those forgotten items!
Do not turn at the HUGE sign that says Beacon Rock State Park, Entrance to camping is about 200 feet pass with small sign “Camping”. (coming from the West)
