Azalea Campground has 110 mixed-use campsites in the Grant Grove area of Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. It is also open year round (although only a limited number of sites are available from November to early May).
The campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Many campsites have large parking pads, but range from 15 to 51 feet. Each site can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 6 people. An overflow parking area is available. Each campsite also has a food locker, table, fire ring and grill.
Campground amenities include drinking water and flush toilets (no showers). The nearest dump stations (summer only) are located at Dorst Creek Campground (when open) in Sequoia National Park, or Princess Campground (Hwy 180). The campground is also within 1/2-mile of the visitor center, market, restaurant, & gift shop. Cell service is not available.
Azalea – Area Recreation
The outdoor activities include hiking through giant sequoia trees and magnificent Azalea shrubs. You can also bike, hike, picnic, explore historic sites, horseback ride, take a picture or two, fish, stargaze and enjoy the bountiful wildlife.
Other campground options in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park are Dorst Creek, Crystal Springs, Lodgepole, Sunset, Potwisha and Buckeye Flat.

Ranger staff camps near 90-110
In order to get a site, go to main bathroom area and pick up yellow envelope/slip. Place money in envelope with your info and drop in box. Tear off slip and hang on camp site post.
You can tell how long someone is going to stay and when they are going to leave by looking at the yellow slips on the site posts.
Pine cones make good kindling and can be found throughout the park
Bring canopy because shade moves and can be scarce
General Grant tree is in walking distance. Trail in campsite leads you straight to it.
No showers. Closest showers are at John Muir lodge. Showers are open 9-5:30. Need cash to purchase coins for showers.
Visitor’s center is very helpful and there is a small gift shop, museum, market, and a food court that is going to open soon.
Panaramic Point was worth driving up the small country road to get to. After looking at the view continue to a 2 mile hike which is doable pre altitude adjustment.
We used 3 gallons of water over 48 hours.
People tended to leave wednesday, friday, and sunday (good days to come) make sure you get to campground EARLY if you want a good site. We recommend around 10 a.m. because checkout is at noon. Drive around to see who is packing up and make sure to stay near the site until it is free. People can get rather territoral when it came to choosing sites (it is first come first serve)
As we left we saw a large line to get into the national park. It must have been at least an hour and a half wait. If you go during the weekend be prepared for that.
Thank you for this great info. I’ve camped at Lodgepole over the past few years but haven’t been able to book a site for the last two years and wasn’t sure how the first come first serve sites would work. Your information is very helpful. I also read this year that the Grant Grove showers are no longer available, but haven’t been able to confirm that.

According to Rec.gov the site allows for a maximum vehicle of 15 feet. With that said – there is usually a little more room (overhang out back). Hello there, camp site #60 says it allows up to 2 cars. Can an extra car be allowed for a fee or is there a parking lot for overflow cars please? Thanks!

Campsite #60 is one of our favorites. It can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 6 people. Generally they don’t permit more than the allowable limit, but sometimes you get the okay from the camp host. There is an overflow parking area (toward entrance) at Azalea Campground.
Beautiful higher elevation campground at Grant Grove, large cedar and sequoia trees, walking distance to General Grant tree and Grant Grove market and restaurant. Be prepared- most sites are very unlevel and there is no cell & internet (don’t count on it). Would absolutely stay again.
Want to stay in campsite 6 or 17. The website says that these are tent only spots which allow for 2 vehicles. However, I have a 14′ teardrop trailer with no generator or A/C that would fit in the driveways . Can I still book one of these sites with my trailer? Thanks !!

Yes – you can park/use your teardrop trailer in either campsite #6 or #17 as long as both vehicles fit on the paved parking surface. Campsite #6 has a combined maximum vehicle length of 39 feet and campsite #17 as a combined maximum vehicle length of 29 feet. Have fun!
October, 2023: note that Azalea is no longer first come-first serve. It’s listed in Recreation.gov. I just made one for a couple nights before the camps close for the season (Oct. 9).
