San Onofre State Beach Bluffs Campground has 175 campsites along old U.S. Route 101 adjacent to the sandstone bluff above the Pacific Ocean. About half are designated for self-contained RVs and the other half are for tents. There are also 3 group campsites available. Group site #1 is just after restroom #5, group site #2 is in between restrooms #8 and #9, and group site #3 is just after restroom #16 (also near Trail 6).
Online reservations are available mid-March through mid-September and are first-come, first-serve other times of the year.
Campsites with views of the ocean include 1-23, 99-119, and 146-174. The rest have a berm or bushes blocking your ocean view. Sites 46-93 have trees and vegetation in between the parking pads – offering some privacy, but these sites are pretty small. Campsites 1-23, 26-44 and 95-175 are best for RVs. Most of these sites have a parking pad length of 35-36 feet. Check in time is 2pm and check out time is 12pm.
The parking lot/parking pads are paved. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill. The campground has vault toilets, drinking water, an RV dump station and cold (outdoor) showers. There are no hookups. Generators are permitted from 10am to 8pm. Overflow parking for campers is also available.
There are 6 trails leading from the campground down to the beach. The campground has beach is very popular with surfers, swimmers, surf fisherman, kayakers and sunbathers. In fact, San Onofre is world famous for its historic surf break. Popular surf locations here includes ‘Trestles, Church, Surf Beach (The Point, Old Mans and Dogpatch), and Trails.
San Onofre State Beach Bluffs – Day Use Areas
There are two day-use areas ($15 per day entrance fee for day-use), located at the South and North ends of San Onofre Bluffs Campground. In addition, the San Onofre Surf Beach offers a day use area with parking right next to the sand. This area is about 1 mile north of the campground and is usually full by 8:00 a.m. on weekends (so get in line by about 6:30 a.m. for a good chance at getting in and finding a parking spot). You can also drive down to drop off stuff, but would need to park your vehicle up in the overflow area.
Also keep in mind that Highway 5 is very close to the campground and you’ll hear the traffic rather than the surf break.
San Onofre State Beach – San Mateo Campground is another option. This campground is 3.5 miles inland from San Onofre State Beach Bluffs Campground..

We are trying to plan a weekend little getaway camp trip in August… I have read tha the spaces are small and close together, this may be a dumb question but… what spaces would you say have the best view of the beach for tent camping and or slightly more privacy than the others. Maybe a spot with trees or not close to a busy area where there is constant foot traffic. I/we have never been here before, so it’s hard to plan without ever seeing the area. Just from looking at the map, it’s hard to tell. Thank you so much in advance. 😁

Campsites 1-23, 99-119, and 146-174 have a view of the beach at San Onofre Bluffs Campground. All sites are about 1/2 mile from the edge of the bluff/cliff that overlooks the beach/ocean. There are six trails from the campground area you can take to the beach. You won’t find many sites with privacy either. Canmpsites that are on the end of each section may offer a bit more privacy. Tent campsites 46-64 and 67-93 also have a bit more privacy (bushes in between the sites).
Also there are not many campsites that have shade at San Onofre Bluffs. Your best bet would be Campsites 23, 24, 25, 93, 94 and 105-119 may have a few campsites that get shade from taller trees.
Why does it say Campsites with views of the ocean include 1-23, 99-119, and 146-174 if you mentioned in your above comment that no sites have a view? Thank you! Hoping to go tomorrow actually just need to book a spot!

It looks like you can see the ocean in the distance looking at sites 47-66. I’m interested in 51 and 52. Can you see the ocean beyond the shrubs?

Yes, if you’re standing next to the fence (or on to of the table) you can see the ocean/water from campsite #51 and #52. You can’t see the beach though.

We would love to plan a visit to spend the weekend at San Onofre Bluffs. We would be tent only camping. I was turned off of San Mateo due to the long one-way walk to the beach. I understand we will need to walk down to the beach, but is it easy for body-able folks to haul a small cooler, umbrella, towels and sand toys to the water from the Bluffs? I do not mind a lack of an ocean view from our site, the freeway sounds, lack of shade (we have a canopy) but the quickest/shortest walk to the beach is my main concern….Any suggestions on best tent sites to book in advance for? (I assume we will need to call for costs etc.) I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks in advance for your help!

The trails from San Onofre Bluffs campground are about 1/2 mile to the beach. Their a bit ‘rugged’ and steep (dropping down to the sand). They probably would not be the easiest to pull anything, but you could carry and make it okay. Another option is to drive about a mile to the San Onofre Surf Beach day-use area. Here you’ll find a great beach, waves and parking that is right next to the sand. There is an entrance fee ($15) and is open from 6:00AM to 10:00PM. Keep in mind that (especially on weekends and during the summer mid-week), all parking will be taken by 7:00AM, if not earlier. We recommend you get in line at 5:00AM (but it’ll be worth it!). You can drive down to drop off stuff, but would need to park your vehicle up in the overflow area.

How does the San O day-use area look on a Sunday in October? Would you still suggest getting in line at 5:00AM?
Good question!
Weekends are pretty popular through mid October, but a 5:00am walk-up call (in line) isn’t needed. I wouldn’t push it much past 7am though just to be safe.

Yes – you can pitch a tent at site like #31 (and similar sites) at San Onofre State Beach – Bluffs campground. Tents must be on the dirt area though.
I have a truck bed tent – does this fall into the allowed use – it would not be on the ground it would be in the bed of the truck

The San Onofre Bluffs day use parking is located before and after the campground. There are a few day-use parking spots scattered throughout the campground. There are about 14 restrooms in the campground/day use area – each about 1/4 to 1/2 mile part. Some of the restrooms have trailheads closely and down to the beach/ocean where you can surf fish. Restroom #4 has a trailhead to the beach and day-use parking. Might want to give that a try. Good luck and have fun!

San Onofre Bluffs has vault toilet (porta-pottys) and cold (free) showers. There are no warm showers available at the campground. A small tent-trailer will fill fit in site 52.
FYI – we will be taking photos of each website for San Onofre Bluffs and will have those on the site in the next few weeks.
Would I be able to fit both a 22′ RV and a tent at spots 1-23? Or 2 tents in one spot? thanks

We actually just took photos of all campsites an San Onofre Bluffs and hope to have those up later next week. I did check sites 1-23 and they are large enough for a 22′ RV. Most all sites will also accommodate 1 tent and 2 small tents should work, but it’d be tight.

On double checking, campsites #97 and #98 at San Onofre State Beach are designated trailer/RV (up to three vehicles). With that said, you can pitch a tent on the dirt area by the picnic table/fire ring if there is room. Might be best to triple check with ReserveCalifornia at 800-444-7275.
Hi there. Thank you for a great post! Do you know what’s the different between “Primitive campsite” (1-23) and “Tent primitive campsite” (67-93)? My friends and I are planning to go there, we have 3 people, 1 car and 1 tent, we don’t have an RV or trailer. Will we be able to stay at a RV/trailer site like 1-23 or will we have to stay at a tent site 67-93?

Great question! To our knowledge the “primitive campsite” (1-23) can accommodate an RV, trailer, OR tent – but there are no hookups. The “tent primitive campsite” (67-93) are just for tents. As noted, you can tent camp in sites 1-23. Have a great time!
can anyone reserve a handicap spot at your campground?

Only campers that have an ADA/handicap license plate and/or sticker can camp at handicapped sites at San Onofre State Beach Bluffs campground.
The system will not let me reserve a campsite, it is an endless cycle of signing in – reserve site – hello! – sign in – reserve site – hello – endlessly, so frustrating. Am I do something wrong or is your site not working?

What does “primitive campsite” mean? I’d like to book camping but unsure if 1) can we have tents? 2) Will picnic table be there? 3) Firepit? 4) Bathrooms? Nearby or a bit of a walk is fine 5) Will we need to walk to the campsite? That’s ok – I’d just like to know what to expect

Great question and I think “primitive” doesn’t really apply to the campsites at San Onofre State Beach.
Each of the campsites (including “primitive”) at San Onofre State Beach Bluffs has a parking pad, table, fire ring and grate. There’s also water spigots, vault toilets, cold showers and an RV dump station. About 1/2 the sites are for tents and the others are for self-contained RVs. FYI – most don’t have a ton of room for tents so it’s good to check out the photos.

Not sure why Reserve California lists some campsites as having a fire pit and others without (and grill too). We photographed all campsites this year and ALL have a fire ring. To our knowledge, all also have a grate (or grill) that folds over the fire ring.
Regarding Campsite B093, what is the tent setup size? And, dies tent set up behind picnic table or on asphalt?

Both of those campsites can fit up to three vehicles and 8 people max. Pad length on both is around 45 feet. Generally it is okay (reference campsite photos #141, #142, and #146 (has trailer). The final call is made by the camp host though. I’ve never heard of anyone not being able to park a trailer in the ‘primitive tent’ campsites at SAN MATEO campground.

I have a tiny 12’ pop up trailer (“Aliner”) and a Honda CRV, from the pictures it feels like we could squeeze into one of sites 79-85 which are available for our trip dates. Would this be permitted? How long/wide are the spaces?

Your Aliner and Honda CRV will fit in those campsite parking areas (79-85). The parking pad width is 16 feet (length 20 feet). Campsite #85 has a large tree (overhang) that may be an issue, but parking your Honda under the limbs should be fine.
We reserved #93 at the bluff campsite for mid June.

There are accessible water spigots throughout San Onofre State Beach Bluffs campground. Not positive on the policy on filling up RV/trailer tanks though. There’s also an RV dump station at the campground.

Yes, you can have a tent on the dirt area, but it’ll be a bit tight. As shown in the photo, you have about a 10×10 area, but you might be able to move the table around to give you more room and away from fire ring.

You can have up to 3 vehicles and 8 people at campsite 110 and/or 111. However, the tent pad area (on the dirt is small – about 5×5. You may be able to fit another tent, but it’ll be very tight (in either site).

Is the San Onofre Bluff campsite 118 big enough for a 18×10 tent? I just purchased a tent but wasn’t sure if the space can accommodate that size.

It looks like campsite #118 has a little bit more room for a tent – compared to the other sites, but it’s hard to tell if an 18×10 foot tent will fit in that spot. ReserveCalifornia.com has the tent pad size as 8×6, so you’re larger tent probably won’t fit.
I will be in campsite 107, can park a 29ft rv there

I heard from a friend that the bluffs are dangerous for smaller children and they could fall off. In one comment you mentioned that the drop off is 1/2 mile from the sites which seems far enough. Do you feel this is a good campsite option for children or is safety a concern? Thanks in advance!

Good question. The campground/campsites are a good distance from the bluffs/cliffs above the beach. As noted – probably about 1/2 mile. The campsites are flat and safe for children – no hazards nearby other than keeping an eye out for occasional campground road traffic that will pass by your campsite. FYI – there are trails from the campground/campsites to the beach.
We will be camping at site 118 next week. What is the size of the tent pad area?

Campsite #64 can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 8 people. The parking pad length is listed as 20 feet. You can park a trailer or RV there, but not quite sure if your 24′ RV will fit. There is some overhang off the back, but might not be enough to keep the front of your RV out of the camp road.

Campsite #95 is designated for trailer or RV. You can have up to 3 vehicles and 8 people on the site. The dirt area will not have room for a tent unfortunately.
What size tent can be pitched at site B61? Also, can the ocean be seen from that site or how far is it walking distance? I am going with 3 children, and 4 adults including myself, knowing where the facilities are relative to this site would be most helpful. We have 2 trucks and want to give the kids a camping experience. Thank you!

Campsite B61 does not have an ocean view. It can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 8 people. The tent pad area is 12×12. You can click on the campground map to get an idea of facilities/trails close to the campground. Trail #3 South is the nearest trail to the beach (from your campsite). It’s about a 1/2 mile walk down to the beach.
Hello, I booked 2 campsites for tomorrow. It says it allows 2 cars per site. We have 4 cars but we have a 5th car coming up (driving solo). Is there overnight overflow parking?

There is quite a number of overflowing parking spaces so they don’t usually fill up. You can check out where the overflow parking is located (P) by clicking on the campground map button. There is some parking really close to campsite #80.
Oh, and I’m not sure if they charge for overflow parking.

Campsite 86 has a tent pad size of 10×10, but it may be a tad bigger. You can have up to 2 vehicles and 8 people at that campsite.

Yes – you can pitch tents in campsites #115 and #116. It’s about 12 feet from the pavement back toward the bushes. You should be able to move the tables around a little to arrange for tent space if needed. Also, each site can have up to 3 vehicles and 8 people. Going to be fun in August!
Hi I am trying to book campsites with my frds we are a total of 5 families with each having 2adults and 2 kids . Do you think we can share sites between 2 families with 6 person tents or shd be get seperate sites from 74-85 which ones are biggers if you can suggest .

Campsites 74-85 are all about the same size. The tent pad area for each site is 12 feet x 12 feet. Each site also can have a maximum of 2 vehicles and 8 people. Not sure how big your 6-person tent is, but it should be no bigger than 12×12 to fit in any of campsites 74-85. Since you have 20 people, you’ll need to get at least 3 campsites. Hope this helps!

How come it says no campfires allowed, then on another page it says fire rings at all campsites?

Not sure where you a reading ‘no campfires allowed’ at San Onofre State Beach Bluffs Campground. Each campsite does have a fire ring and most of the time campfires are allowed. The exception is when extreme fire conditions exist (dry / windy). Fires are only allowed in the campsite fire rings. They are not allowed on the beach.
We are staying in camp site BF033. Will that site accommodate a 35′ 5th wheel with truck detached?

Campsite #33 has the pad length listed as 28 feet. There is about 10 feet of space behind the curb, but the (chained down) table may get in the way. All wheels must be on the paved surface and the trailers hitch must be within the parking spot too. You may get away with parking it diagonally and parking your truck in overflow. Just not sure if the ranger will allow.
We reserved San Onofre site 169 & 170 for next weekend. Is there going to be room for 1 tent on either of those sites?

You should be able to make some room for a small-medium sized tent if you can move the picnic table. It’ll be tight though.

Yes, you’ll need a license. Anyone 16 years of age or older must have a license to fish off California beaches.

Hi! We are staying at Bluffs for the Memorial Day weekend and I’m wondering how easy to get to San O surf beach for surfing? I know that people would line up at 6 am to get parking at San O beach, but if we are staying at Bluffs, is there a separate parking area for campground tenants?

Unfortunately Bluff campers don’t have an advantage to access the Surf Beach. There isn’t a separate parking area or line for campers. You’ll need to get in line early – especially on weekends. 6AM is probably a good time to get in line. Best of luck!
Where is Group Site #2 located at the Bluffs? I have stayed at G1 before (near Trail 3), and noticed a new group site last summer (2023) near Trail 6, is this Group Site #2? Thanks!

Great question! San Onofre Bluffs group site #1 is just after restroom #5, group site #2 is in between restrooms #8 and #9, and group site #3 is just after restroom #16 (also near Trail 6).
