Sugar Pine Point State Park Overview
Sugar Pine Point State Park Campground (also known as Ed Z’berg or General Creek) has 175 campsites located in a Ponderosa pine forest about 1/2 mile from Lake Tahoe. All campsites are available to reserve from about mid-May to mid-September, but there are also 24 sites (first-come, first-serve) that are open year-round for snow camping. There are no hookups available.
The Park has one of the best natural areas on Lake Tahoe with almost 2 miles of lake frontage. There’s also a nice forest of pine, fir, aspen and cedar trees. Each campsite has a table, fire ring, grate and food storage locker. Some have BBQ pedestals. All food, beverages and toiletries must be stored in the food locker. Also, ice chests may not be stored in vehicles. Violators will be sited. The inside dimensions of the food lockers 36″ deep, 43″ wide, and 22″ high.
Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, showers, an RV dump station, campground host, campfire center, picnic area and firewood (for sale). Overflow parking is also available.
Group campsites are 1-10. There are also 11 accessible campsites (92, 94, 95, 100, 116, 117, 119, 161, 168, 169, 174). Each site has parking, a cooking facility, water, trash bin, and a tent pad. In addition, the restrooms, showers and campfire center is accessible.
Sugar Pine Point is above 6,200-ft elevation so be sure you check the weather conditions. The campground is open year round, but only with a limited number of sites in the winter. Most campsites are reservable, but there are a handful they keep open for first-come, first-serve. Campsites can accommodate trailers up to 26 feet and RVs up to 32 feet.
Sugar Pine Point State Park – Area Recreation
There’s a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy in the area. Hiking is very popular, with a number of alpine hiking trails. Remember to bring your hiking boots, because you will have more than a half a dozen hiking trails to choose from.
Other activities include fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, boating, picnicking, play some tennis, visit the historic sites and wildlife viewing . In the winter you can also cross country ski, snow-shoe, or hit some of the nearby ski resorts.
Meeks Bay campground has 40 campsites and is also a short drive from Sugar Pine Point State Park.

Most campsites at Sugar Pine Point State Park are reservable, but there are a handful they keep open for first-come, first-serve. If you’re arriving Monday, September 10th for a few nights – you may get lucky, but it’ll still be busy. Best to arrive as early as possible. And you can always check for availability and make a reservation by clicking on the ‘Make A Reservation’ button HERE.

We are looking at making summer reservations. We need 3 spots that can hold smaller RVs. Any recommendations?
Hi Lindsey, Most all of the sites at Sugar Pine Point State Park can handle smaller RVs, but I’d look at sites 78+ as they tend to be larger. Have a great time!
I just made a reservation and I have a 20 ft trailer. It says up to 26 ft trailer here but the reservation says>32
Include length of car and trailer.
What gives?
Does my trailer need to be less than 15 feet.
My truck is about 18 ft.

Best to refer to your ReserveCalifornia.com reservation confirmation. They general indicate the ‘pad length’ of each site. If it says 32 feet – that’s the pad length. You may have a few feet overhang off the back of the pad, and also pads are generally wide enough to park you trails and fit your vehicle (along side or at a bit of an angle.
Hi! Can we go with an RV to a tent site like 134? Is not available when I use filters in reservecaliforonia.com, but it has a 32ft pad that is more than enough for my RV 🙂 thanks!

Planning on camping in mid June, have a pop up camper wondering if there are electrical sites and what and do bear proof coolers also have to be placed in the bear boxes?

Unfortunately not even bear proof coolers are permitted to be left out at your campsite. Per Sugar Pine Point State Park policy: “All food, beverages and toiletries must be stored in the food locker. Also, ice chests may not be stored in vehicles. Violators will be sited. The inside dimensions of the food lockers 36″ deep, 43″ wide, and 22″ high.”
Also, there are no electric hookup campsites at Sugar Pine Point State Park campground.
is the sugar pine point beach pier open to private vehicles in order to launch kayaks? or anywhere else along sugar pine beach? thx.

The pier at Sugar Pine Point State Park is too high to launch kayaks, but the beach (and grassy area next to the beach) is a great place to launch your kayak and paddle Lake Tahoe!
we launched our kayaks very easy from the parking lot. we parked and walked them down in front of the Boat Caretakers Cottage.
we stayed for a week, site #146. Water right in front of space, great cell service for Verizon. Bear Box was large enough for 2 ice chests and room to spare. Showers are 3 minutes, you have to purchase tokens to operate the shower. I would definitely stay here again!
How private is campsite #78?

The ‘privacy fact’ for Sugar Pine Point State Park campsite #78 should be fairly good. You have some nice trees & bushes in between sites. Also there’s some nice distance between sites. The shower facilities won’t be a factor either.
Does site 47 share the same spot with 48? What is the best site on this loop?

Sugar Pine Point State Park campsites #47 and #48 are next to each other and the parking pads are side-by-side. Each site has it’s own table, fire ring, grate and food locker. The campsites in this look are pretty cozy (close to each other). All sites have at least one close neighbor. None of our favorite sites are in this loop, those are: 77, 82, 157, 167 and 173. If you wanted a little space/privacy, probably your best bet is going with a site that doesn’t have a neighbor at least on one side, like: 48, 49, 52 and 53. Hope this helps.

I’m wondering how high off the ground the bear boxes are. I’m assuming I’ll have to take my cooler out each time I want to get something out of it and don’t want to bring one that’s too big or heavy to manage.

The bears boxes at Sugar Pine Point State Park are generally about 4-5 inches off the ground.
I saw that Sugar Pine will be opening soon? When can I make a reservation online or do I need to call? I am so excited, no other year in my life for sure have I needed the serenity of Tahoe!

Beautiful campground! Lots to do… hiking, kayaking on the lake, biking. Absolutely atrocious reservation system, though! You need to be stout of heart (or have a LOT of patience) to brave attempting to use the on-line system..

Hi! Do the group campgrounds allow RV’s/Travel Trailers? If so, are they able to drive on to the dirt and park anywhere within the space for that group campground? Or do they park in the parking lot of the site?

You can park an RV in the group camping parking space, but not sure about travel trailers. There is a group camping parking lot area and from there you walk (about 20-30 yards) to the (tent) camping area. What is the best ADA site for privacy and access to water and trails?

Sugar Pine Point State Park (General Creek) campground has 11 accessible campsites (92, 94, 95, 100, 116, 117, 119, 161, 168, 169, 174). I will be staying at Sugar Pine. Point CG in August. I have a travel trailer with big refrigerator. Can I store food in there, or do I have to use bear locker?

Yes, you can store your food in your trailer’s refrigerator.
We will be at sugar pine point campground the end of august. We have a 31 foot 5th wheel – from tip to toe, and have site 33 reserved. Will that be easy to navigate?

Just checked ReserveCalifornia and it shows group campsites are available over Memorial Day weekend. Looks like you can “reserve a unit”. You’ll need to go to ReserveCalifornia.com to reserve (not Reserve America).

I was just up there this week getting new/updated photos of all the campsites. We probably won’t have those posted to the site for a few weeks though. I would recommend group sites#9 & #10, and #20 & #21.
I am looking at General Creek Group sites located in sugar pine. We have two small airstream trailers. Can we park them at the group sites? WE will be tenting as well.

Yes, you can park small trailers/RVs in the group campsites (parking pads). Overflow parking is also available for towing vehicles.
For the group site 10, how is the vehicle count determined. We will be pulling a trailer so are we considered 2 vehicles. Max of 10 vehicles per site details.

Correct – a trailer is counted as 1 vehicle and your towing vehicle as a second vehicle. So you will have 2 vehicles.
Hello! We will be coming through the Tahoe area May 9th – 12th 2022 – it looks like sites are on a first come first serve basis. Can you tell us how that system works and also what the expected camp capacity will be this time of year? I’m nervous if we show up on the 9th at 5 PM (after a long day of driving) that there may not be any sites open. Thank you for any help or guidance you can give!

If there’s not a ranger available to check you in, you’ll drive through the campground to find an open site. Then a ranger or camp host will swing by to collect fees. If a ranger is available when you arrive, he/she may assign you a site or tell you to go pick one. There should be a good amount of campsites available for a May 9-12 stay – no worries. Have fun!

Absolutely – you’ll be able to camp at your Sugar Pine Point State Park campsite in late September. The campground is open year-round (although only a few campsites available off season). The only reason you couldn’t camp is if they close the campground (fire danger, etc.). Have a great time!

For most California State Parks there is a 30-night maximum stay limit per customer in a calendar year with usually a 7-night consecutive maximum. California State Parks advises contacting individual parks to confirm, but I wasn’t able to get that info online or by calling Sugar Pine Point State Park. You might try calling the park at 530 525-9528.
I booked campsites 89 and 85. I was hoping for 87 but couldn’t get it. Do you think 89 and 85 would be easily connected for me and my friends?
Does 85 pretty much have direct access to the bathrooms? Its hard to tell from the pictures.

Since campsite #87 is in between sites 85 and 89 it’ll be a little awkward to walk through and/or around the back of that site but using the camp road will be easy. Both sites 85 and 89 are quite large and among our favorites. And you will be able to walk from the rear of site #85 over to the bathroom. Have a great time!
