May Queen Campground PSICC Colorado

May Queen Overview

May Queen 003

May Queen Campground has 27 campsites along a creek and is at the far western end of Turquoise Lake in a shaded lodgepole pine forest. The spacious sites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Six of the sites are first-come, first-serve, but the rest are reservable. Campsites 1 to 8 are ‘walk to’ sites (ranging from about 150 to 400 feet from parking area).

Campground amenities include drinking water (hand pump), vault toilets and trash collection. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate.  A firewood vendor is also on site.

May Queen – Area Recreation

The campground offers easy access to boating and fishing on Turquoise Lake. Hikers will like the 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail. Other activities include mountain biking, backpacking, swimming, picnicking, hunting, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. The historic mining town of Leadville is also worth a visit!

You may also like Fourmile or Horseshoe campgrounds. Other campgrounds in the area include Baby Doe, Tabor, Father Dyer, Printer Boy, Belle of Colorado, Molly Brown, Silver Dollar, Matchless and Sugar Loafin’.

One Comment on “May Queen”

  1. Tom Wilberding says:

We reserved site 1 and paid in advance based on the Recreation.gov photo, which was misleading. First this site is on a slope. The picnic table is level but there is no level place to put your tent, not even close to level. Secondly, surprise, you have to walk 500 steps uphill to get to site 1 from parking.
We were disappointed but noticed the host advertised four vacant tent sites “first come first served.” The sites had level tent pads and were close to parking. Great! We’ll just swap our defective site for a decent one. Wrong! The host told us we had to pay for the decent site and would forfeit our defective site payment, too late to cancel. He said his boss at ExplorUS insisted on this policy. So we must pay double. Welcome to May Queen! We won’t be back.
