Battle of Athens State Historic Site features the site of the most northern battle fought west of the Mississippi during the Civil War. The campground is first-come, first-served and has 29 campsites for tents, trailers and RVS. There are 15 campsites with electric hookups.  The campground has vault toilets and showers. Each campsite has a table, fire ring and lantern post.

Area Recreation & Activities

In addition to exploring the historic sites, visitors enjoy boating and fishing on the Des Moines River. Other outdoor recreation includes hiking, biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Battle of Athens State Historic Site also has several interpretive trails and tours of the battlefield and historic buildings.

    This is one of my favorite campgrounds. I always stay in site #17, but every site is wooded and private. Check out the battlefield and historic buildings as well as the ruins of an old mill.
