Coal Mine Campground has 15 campsites in a forested area about 10 miles northeast of Grants at an elevation of 7,404 feet.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (20 to 45 feet). Each site also has a paved parking spur, table, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include vault toilets (2) and trash collection. Potable (drinking) water is not available. Cell coverage is poor in the area.

You may also like Bluewater Lake State Park (37 miles).

Coal Mine – Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, stargazing and wildlife viewing.

The El Malpais National Monument and Conservation is also a short drive from the campground. It has an extensive, ancient lava flow landscape and other scenic features draw tourists year-round.

The 11,301 feet peak of Mount Taylor, the highest point in northwest New Mexico, can be also seen if you drive past the campground on State Highway 547 (FR239).
