Fort Churchill State Park has two campgrounds including Samuel Bucklands (20 sites) and Scout Camp (dispersed camping) along the Carson River. Group camping is also available.

Fort Churchill was built in 1860 to protect early settlers, emigrants and guard the Pony Express. . Buckland Station is also within the park boundaries. It was an important way station for pioneer travelers on the Overland Route.

Camping Info

Samuel Bucklands Campground has 20 campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Hookups are not available but each site has a table, fire ring and grill. They are also shaded by the large cottonwood trees that grow along the river. Amenities include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection. Hookups are not available. A dump station is also located near the campground entrance.

Scout Camp is located on the Carson River Ranch section of the park and is adjacent to the Carson River. It offers large dispersed camping and day-use picnic areas. Amenities include vault toilets, picnic tables fire rings and grills. Several horse corrals are also available. All trash and horse manure must be carried out. There is no water or electricity at Scout Camp.

The group camping area can accommodate up to 60 people for tent camping.  The area includes a covered pavilion with picnic tables, vault toilets, a sink and food preparation countertop, a large charcoal grill and a fire ring. There is also an amphitheater-style seating area.

Fort Churchill State Park – Area Recreation and Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. You can also tour the fort’s ruins, Buckland Station and other historic structures.
