Tumalo State Park Area Recreation

Tumalo State Park is a great base camp to take advantage of the many outdoor activities in the area including teeing it up at one of the golf courses, hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, mountain biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The Deschutes River is a popular rafting/kayaking destination and commercial outfitters are also available to take you down the river! And if you’re into winter camping, nearby Mt Bachelor offers downhill skiing.

You may also like LaPine State Park. It’s about 34 miles to the south.  Prineville Reservoir State Park is also nice.

  1. What a joke! It sounded like a nice big campground with tons of tent spaces, modern showers and flush toilets.. Don’t go in the winter unless you have a self contained RV and an online prepaid reservation. The bathrooms in the day use area and tent spots are closed for the winter. The Oregon State doesn’t clean the outhouses they offer instead. They are not serviced and are full of poop and feminine products. There are only a few RV spaces and the tent spaces open are a little circle in front of the RV’s right in front of the bathrooms. We were willing to rent a space for $22 a night to sleep in our tiny car in a safe place close to a bathroom and a shower for work in Bend. The gates to most of the tent spots were locked for the winter. But of course the ad said open all year. What a disappointment.

    • Amber this is a campground. Not your winter car camping destination.

    • Wow — I’ve winter car-camped extensively in this very popular park. it is true that two of the loops are closed, but the loop that is open has a wide variety of full hook-up, tent/car, and yurt sites. The bathrooms and showers are some of the most recently-installed in the entire state park system. They are heated, well-insulated, and cleaned meticulously.

Tent and car campers should be aware that It gets very cold on winter nights in C.O. after the sun goes down. If this is inconvenient for you, you should consider renting a hook-up site with electricity and purchase an extension cord and a small, safe heater from Home Depot if you need warmth.
