Sol Duc Overview
Sol Duc Campground has 96 campsites (17 with water & electric) and is located in an old growth forest along the Sol Duc River in Olympic National Park.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (20 to 50 feet). The 17 RV sites (RV Loop 1-17) have water & electric hookups. The RV hook sites can accommodate RVs from 20 to 36 feet (depending on the site) and have 50-amp. RV sites 14 to 17 are good for slideouts. Each campsite also has a table, food storage locker (most sites), fire ring and grill. Tent only sites are 1-4, 9, 10, 11, 33, 37, 38, 73 and 75. Campsites can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 8 people per site.
The campground takes reservations from late March to late October. It also has drinking water, restrooms with flush toilets and a dump station. It does not have hookups or showers. Cell service is poor.
Campers also have access ($) to the resort facilities, which include the hot mineral-spring pools, freshwater pool, gift shop, restaurants, restrooms and showers. The Mineral Hot Springs & Pool will be available from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM. Make a reservation to use them at the resort front desk. Reservations can only be made for one of the two time slots per day. Campers also have access to The Springs Restaurant.
Fairholme campground is another option and is about 8 miles away. Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort also offers camping, cabins and lodge rooms.
Sol Duc and the Dragon Legend
Once upon a time two dragons lived in the area and one day they got a little angry at each other. A fight ensued, but they were evenly matched. After a long battle both retreated to their respective dragon caves crying their poor little eyes out. Legend has it that the dragons’ (hot) tears are the source of the hot springs in the Elwha and Sol Duc Valleys. Today, you can soak in the dragons tears at the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. Its just a short walk from the campground and is open during the summers only. It also has a gift shop and restaurant.

I see site 59 is one of your favorites. Do you hear and see a lot of people using the trail adjacent to it? We will be camping in a tent.

Hi Corrine! I was just wondering about site 59 as well–did you ever get a response or visit yourself? I just booked site 10 for the spring but would really love to be at site 59 and its proximity to the waterfall hike if it isn’t too busy.
I’m looking to book a Sol Duc campsite July 17-19th of 2019 and see that for most sites those particular dates are showing as not yet released. But some before and around the dates are already reserved (and thus have been released). Since I can’t call the park offices and speak to someone about this due to the current govt shutdown, would you be able to possibly answer why the dates would be showing as “not yet released?”

A good question! How it works is that you can make a reservation for an arrival six months in advance. So if you wanted to start your camping on July 20, the first day you can make a reservation is on January 20 (10AM Eastern Standard Time). In other words, campsites for a July 20 arrival will show as either unavailable/not yet released, or taken. Those sites that are ‘taken’ were the result of someone booking the site a day or more earlier – for multiple nights. As an example – booking the site (on Jan 17) for a July 17 arrival for 6 nights. Does that make sense?
I’m having the same issue, Kristina. Looks like people have booked weekends into September?! Would definitely appreciate some more info on this. Called recreation.gov, but they were also confused.
More than likely the National Park Service has blocked off those dates for their volunteer groups, administrative use, or other non-public use. So you’re not missing a secret to getting in ahead of the crowds.

I’m having the same issue as Kristina. Just called recreation.gov and they were stumped as well. If you look at the availability chart, you can see that certain sites (check out weekend dates on popular sites like 10, 11, etc.) appear to have non-consecutive reservations into September, although technically that shouldn’t be possible yet. Are other users using some sort of book-then-date-change workaround? Thanks for your help!

A mystery to us too as to why those campsites are showing ‘reserved’. Surprised Rec.gov doesn’t have an answer. We’ll try and do a little research too.

We reserved site 67 in loop B. Is there actually a spot for a tent? It looks odd in photos. And is there room for two cars? I hear that it shares parking with site 69 – so it could hold 4 cars there if needed (2 for each site). And if I wanted to change my site, can I do that without a fee?

There’s an area behind the picnic table for tents at Sol Duc campsite #67. There may even been an area to right of picnic table (but it looks a bit uneven). I recommend calling Recreation.gov if you’d like to switch your campsite. There should be no fee.(877) 444-6777
Can RVs park on sites outside the RV loop? When I attempted to book and selected my equipment as an RV the only options it gave me are in the RV loop, but I see photos of RVs on Google with RVs on them. I booked RV013. If this is in the RV loop I am note sure I want it, because it looks like a parking and sites are on top of each other. Do I have that right?

I am curious as to the shower facilities at the campground. My research indicates there are no showers in the campground loops and that to get a shower you must use the facilities at the resort. However, these can be crowded. Is this true? Thanks

Sol Duc campground does not have showers, but campers also have access to the resort facilities, which include the hot mineral-spring pools, freshwater pool, gift shop, restaurants, restrooms and showers. We have not heard of the showers at the resort are crowded. Perhaps someone can comment on the shower situation at the resort . .
For september I booked site 14 for my 24 feet RV. It’s a big spot on the campground. Is this spot ok for my RV? many thanks.

Yes, campsite 14 at Sol Duck campground will work great for your 24′ RV. It will fit fine!
My tent is 10ft by 14ft which site is best for this size of a tent? All the site seems to have a really small tent area.

Sol Duck campsites 12, 14, 17, 23, 24, 27, 31, 49, 52, 54, 60, 69, 70, and 79 should all have plenty of room for a 10×14 tent.

A fee is required to pass through any entrance of Olympic National Park (even if you have a paid campsite reservation). You can use your annual National Park pass (if you have one). Although check in is 12pm, you can arrive anytime that afternoon/night. Campsites are generally held until 7am the next day.
I just booked the Group site at Sol Due Hot Springs Campground, and I can’t seem to find any photos of it anywhere on the Internet, including on recreation.gov. I can photos of seemingly every other site in the park. Could I possibly get photos of the Group site?
Sorry David, we don’t have photos of the group sites, but I hope to schedule a photographer to get those done later in the year.
I just booked an RV site for our vintage 13′ trailer, mostly in the RV spot so we could have power. I couldn’t find a map that showed the numbered RV spots. I chose #7 at random, but I really don’t want to end up in a bad space or right next to the entrance. Are there any maps that list the site numbers for the RV spaces?

Unfortunately there is not a campground map available for Sol Duc. The electric/RV hookup sites are in the RV loop (campsites 1-17). We hope to get photos of those sites this summer.
I was at Sol Duc this last weekend and took some shots of the RV spots. They really don’t have a map of them, but it is really a dirt parking lot with logs between the sites. I could sketch up a map and send you the photos if you’re interested.

Hi, I am trying to understand what the capacity ratings on the reservation webpage means. For example, they are rated single – quad capacity. Does this mean how many tents would fit at a site? Specifically sites 8-10 — would they be big enough for 2 large tents?(10×10 & 11×10)

That’s a good question. We’re not sure what exactly a ‘quad’ capacity rating means on Recreation.gov. You can chat with Recreation.gov online and ask by going HERE.
Does anyone know if the tables at Sol Duc Campground can be moved, or are they chained down? I’m looking at the photo of site 14 and the table looks like its right next to the parking space. Or is that an optical illusion?

In the picture of Sol Duc Campsite #14, there are actually two tables. The one closest to the parking pad is concrete, the other one is steal/wood. Neither are chained, but the concrete table will be extremely heavy to move. There’s about 10 feet of room from the end of the parking pad to the table. Not sure if the other (wood/steel) table is still at the site, but if so – you’ll be able to move it. Have a great trip!

I have site 78 reserved for labor day weekend, however in the picture the actual site itself looks quite small (not sure if it’s just the angle) compared to the paved in portion. We will have 6-8 guests and 3-4 tents, will there be enough space?

Sol Duc campsite #78 looks like it’ll accommodate 3 small tents, maybe 4. You can put one to the right and left of the table, and toward the back (behind table / to right of fir ring). There may be some room to left of parking pad (toward the front).
We (a family of 4) will be renting a camper van (22-24 ft.) and also have a small tent. We don’t need hookup. Can we fit our rig in a tent site? Any particular sites you recommend?

Yes you can park/fit your camper van in the parking pads of the tent-only campsites at Sol Duc campground. Our favorite Sol Duck campsites are: 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 44, 54 and 59. Yes you can make a reservation with a trailer at Sol Duc RV Loop Sites 1-17. You can have two vehicles per site (including a trailer). Just double check the size for each site.

Yes, there are some campsites at Sol Duc Campground that can accommodate trailers, RVs, 5th-wheeler campers up to 35 feet. Click on the “Make A Reservation’ button and you can check availability, site sizes, pricing, etc. The link will direct you to Recreation.gov site and if you click on individual sites – you’ll see the dimensions.
Hey, Im booked for camp 008 in loop A. Question is if I’m allowed to back my wrangler(which is my overlander/camp set up) into this sight. And yeah it’s less then 20ft. Figured I could since the site is trailer ready. Just making sure, thanks.

I just booked sites 16 and 19 for the end of July. Can I fit two cars and two tents per site?

Sol Duc campsites 16 and 18 can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 8 people per site. The tent/pad areas for both should fit two small tents.
Can you tell me if site A15 will accommodate 2 tents? One is 8×8 and the second is a smaller 2 person tent. It’s hard to tell from the photo how large the campsite tent area is.

How far is site 55 from the river? How does this distance compare to how far site 9 is from the water? Will a 10×12 ft tent fit in both sites? Will both sites it trailers up to 26′? Thanks!

Sol Duc campsite #9 is about 50 feet from the river and site #55 is about 100 feet. Site 9 is tent only (10×12 will fit), with a maximum vehicle / parking pad area of 20 feet. Campsite #55 has a parking pad area of 25 feet, but can accommodate a trailer up to 26 feet. Keep in mind that the camp host will make the final call. Campsite #55 can also accommodate a tent (10×12).
Hello, what is the nearest showering option? we will be there for over a week starting Aug. 15th and I see there is no shower in the campground.

Usually you can use the showers across the street over at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. However: H “At this time, campers will not have access to the Mineral Hot Springs & Pool or The Springs Restaurant. Take out from The Springs Restaurant will not be available. Day passes will not be available for the Mineral Hot Springs & Pool.” This may also be the case for the showers. You may try calling the resort to confirm: 888-896-3818.
Having an impossible time getting in touch with someone at the campground. How do the food lockers work? Do we need to bring our own lock? Also, how big are they? I read that they dont want us checking in at the office for social distancing reasons, so where are they located? I assume they aren’t in the actual campsites since the whole point is to deter wildlife by removing food smells…

Typically, the US Forest Service food/bear-proof storage lockers are 17 inches deep x 49 inches wide x 17 inches high. These are self locking (not padlock or key needed). If they don’t check you in at the office, then you can check in with the camp host (at the camp host site), or a camp host/ranger will swing by your campsite to check you in. You don’t have to wait for the host/ranger to set up camp though. Check in is 2pm and check out is 12pm. Also – “At this time, campers will not have access to the Mineral Hot Springs & Pool or The Springs Restaurant. Take out from The Springs Restaurant will not be available. Day passes will not be available for the Mineral Hot Springs & Pool.”

Sol Duc campsite #8 is a prime river front spot! Looks like you have a tent pad area to the right of picnic table that is about 15 feet wide by 25 feet long. There’s another smaller area to left of table (about 8×10). You may set up as many tents as will fit at your campsite. You are correct in that 2 vehicles are allowed at the site. I’m not sure what the policy is in fitting a 3rd vehicle. If allowed, all wheels would need to be on the paved parking area. I recommend calling the campground/resort directly to confirm and find out what the ‘quad’ rating means. 1 (888) 896-3818

Sol Duc campsite can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 8 people. The tent pad area is about 12×20. You can fit 2 tents, but not sure how large.
Good morning. I read you previous answer to the OPs question about the tent pad at Loop B Site 67. Do you know how large the tent pad is? I am wondering if I can pitch an 8′ x 8′ tent, with vestibules beyond that footprint, or if I will need to use a smaller backpacking tent, or two. Thank you in advance.

We are visiting the ONP during the week of June 21st. I was wondering if there would be site availability for the 26 or 27? We are planning to stay near Hurricane Ridge one night, another night in Hoh and one night in Sol Duc. We will be arriving from North Cascades and stopping somewhere in between Port Townsend and Hurricane Ridge. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you in advance for your help.

Unfortunately both Sol Duc and Hoh Rainforest campgrounds are sold out through June and even July. Most campgrounds sell out during the summer when they first become available to reserve (6 months prior to the day of arrival). You can check Recreation.gov for availability, pricing and to make reservations (if available) for these and other campgrounds in the area. Hopefully you can find some availability! If not, you can try our Campsite Assist tool. For a fee, Campsite Assist will send you a text & email alert if/when a campsite becomes available on the dates you want to camp. Just be sure to click on the reservation link (included in your alert) ASAP to try and reserve the site as others will be monitoring as well. Best of luck!
I am visiting with a 24 ft RV. Do you know if my only option is to use the 17 sites within the RV lot? Or would I be allowed to use a campground site within the A or B loops? I don’t need the hookups and I really would like the privacy and the fire rings that the campground sites would provide. Thanks!

Yes, you can camp and park your RV in one of the A & B loop campsites. Just double check the size of the site (on Rec.gov) to make sure it fits. Have fun!

I plan to stay at the campground for one night. The fee is 14 dollars each night per the photo on the webpage, but I would be charged $29 when I made a one-night reservation.

Campsite A12 has a lot of room for tents and I’m pretty sure two good-sized tents will fit. Depends on the size of your tents though.
When looking at the RV sites, does 20′ rv site mean 20 ft. total vehicle length? Or is there room dor a 20 ft. trailer plus tow vehicle?

We will have photos of all the Sol Duc RV campsites by this month. The sites allow for side-by-side parking of your trailer and towing vehicle. They list the sites as 20 foot maximum length, but there is some extra room if your trailer is a little longer.
