Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a coastal park located at the northeastern tip of the Bayfield Peninsula in Lake Superior.
Camping is available on 18 of the Lakeshore’s 21 islands and one campsite on the mainland. The mainland campsite is only accessible by kayak or a 60 mile hike. There is no drive up car, tent or RV camping available in the Apostle Islands. Some islands/camping areas have a ranger or camp host assigned. Some cell service is available in the area.
There are also 9 group campsites that can accommodate 8 to 21 people. The group sites are located on 5 islands (Sand, Oak, Basswood, Stockton and Rocky). Camping permits are required and distributed through a lottery that takes place each year for that calendar year. The winners are listed at 12pm CST on the Tuesday, March 9 on the National Park Service page.
Outdoor recreation includes sailing, boating, fishing, hiking, kayaking, swimming, picnicking, hunting, trapping, scuba diving and wildlife viewing. There are also boat and guided tours available.
