We are searching for a spot to tent camp literally on or right near the beach in a few weeks. We have 2 small dogs as well and live in San Diego. Thanks in advance for suggestions!!!

    Hi Samantha,

You have a few beach campground options in the San Diego area. San Elijo State Beach, and South Carlsbad State Beach offer campsites on a bluff overlooking the beach/ocean. Silver Strand State Beach also has beachfront, but tent camping is not allowed (only self-contained vehicles). A little further north are San Clemente State Beach (although none are ‘on the beach’, but you can take a 1/4 mile trail to the beach), and Doheny State Beach.

Keep in mind that all of these campgrounds are very popular and might be booked on weekends. You can try and get a cancelation by getting in line (at the campground) around 7:30am each morning.

Best of luck and hope this helped with your planning!
