are we allowed to camp on tents now at new shady rest campground. we are planning to go this Thursday ….we didn’t reserve yet but can we have first come first serve

    • Hi Cynthya,

Yes you can camp with tents at New Shady Rest campground (first come campsites and/or reservable campsites). There are 17 first-come, first-serve campsites at New Shady Rest campground. Those can not be assigned in advance of your arrival. You will need to check in with the camp host/ranger when you arrive to see if any first-come, first-serve campsites are available. I recommend arriving mid-week and no later than noon as this is a popular campground – especially on weekends.

  2. Nancy Hunt says:

Can we use a generator at this campground?

    • Hi Nancy,
To our knowledge, we have not been able to find whether generators are allowed at New Shady Rest campground. You may want to try the campground info line at: 760 935-4213

  3. what time does the caampsite open? we plan on arrivign on saturday at 5am to hopefully get a campsite!

    • Hi Ana,

I’d first check to see if there are any available (reservable) campsites at New Shady Rest campground by clicking on the “Make A Reservation’ button. If not, there will be 17 walk-in (first come, first-serve) campsites. Arriving Saturday morning will reduce your chances as most usually arrive on Friday (sometimes Thursday) to grab weekend spots. If there is a site available you can take it. If the campground is full, you’ll need to get in line and wait for one to open up. Check out is 11am, so you’ll know by then. Best of luck!

Phone number is incorrect. Phone number listed is to a different campground that is not in Mammoth Lakes Ca.

  5. Big Wave Dave says:

    Answer to the generator question.
Having camped many times over the years both tent and trailer a generator is allowed to be used. Operating hours are from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Quite hours are from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am.
I have heard the camp host ask someone to limit the run time being the generator was an older construction model with a loud exhaust.
    Hope this helps!
    Happy trails 🍻

  6. Bob Carley says:

We have 2 sites reserved in New Shady, 1 for an rv and the other for tent. Friends have reservations for 2 sites at Twin Lakes, which is not yet open. If Twin Lakes does not open by 7/3, can we have a tent join our rv site and can our other site have 2 tents. Thanks for your help.

  7. Jackie C says:

I understand about the first come, first serve system. However, I can’t find anywhere what time in the morning it’s available to inquire for that night. Does a line form somewhere at New Shady Rest Campground, and are you allowed to arrive early to get in line? Where is this office for lining up? Thanks. We’re coming on Monday, June 29. Thanks.

    • Hi Jackie,
As you enter New Shady Rest campground from Sawmill road, veer right around the dump station and you’ll see the camp host sites on the left hand side. Check out is usually 11am and check in is around 2pm. Not sure if a line forms, but likely on the weekend. Probably a good idea to check on available sights early morning.

  8. If I have an RV set up at campsite but its 19′ 4″ and the campsite is 19’…….would that be an issue?

  9. What happens if you have 7 people in a family. Could we stay in 1 campsite?

  10. What is max number of tents per camp site? Are three tents OK?

    • Hi John,
You can have up to 2 vehicles and 6 people per campsite at New Shady Rest campground. Up to 3 tents are okay if they are within the boundaries of your campsite.

  11. Carlo Oben says:

Hello. Are the campsites open? I am planning to stay from August 14-17, 2020. Are there any working toilets and showers? Do the campsites have electrical hookups? Thanks.

    Carlo

  12. Hey team! We have reservation from Sept 4-7 for campsite 154 – our reservations were transferred from a friend who can no longer attend. Who should I call to ensure we have the right permits/have paid for the number of cars we expect to be on site

    • Way to go Mindy!
New Shady Rest campground has a limit of 2 cars and 6 people per site: In accordance with standard industry practices, Inyo Recreation will assess an additional vehicle fee per day for the second vehicle in each single family campsite, and on the third and fourth vehicle in any double family campsite, provided these vehicles are not joined to the first vehicle by a hitch and towed onto the site. In the case of motorcycles, the first two are considered one vehicle, and the third and fourth motorcycle are also considered one vehicle. No additional vehicle fees are collected for bicycles.

You can check in with the camp host to pay for your extra vehicle(s), as well as occupy your campsite. You can also just go to the campsite and check in later that day. Have fun!

  13. What is the cancellation policy on reservations for New Shady Rest Campgrounds? Is there anything different about campsites 149 and 150. Why are those campsites seem to be always available?

  14. Shawn Takeuchi says:

I have two campsites reserved for July-2022. How far are showers from the campsites? The description states there are none at the campground but there are some nearby??
