Doane Valley Campground in Palomar Mountain State Park has 31 campsites for RVs (up to 27 feet) trailers or tents in the beautiful Cleveland National Forest. Almost all have of the sites have stairs either up or down to the campsite table/fire ring area. Each campsite has a table, fire ring, grate, grill and food storage cabinet. The campground has a campfire center, flush toilets, showers, drinking water and overflow parking area. The campground roads and parking spurs are paved.  Doane Creek runs past the campground (close to sites 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26) and a few trailheads start from the campground.

Palomar Mountain State Park features spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, camping, stargazing, wildlife viewing, picnicking, hiking, biking and fishing (trout) in Doane Pond.  A beautiful Coniferous forest covers much of the 1,897 acres and the area feels much like something you’d find n the Sierra Nevada.  East of the park is the world-famous Palomar Observatory.

The Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park is great organization that has been instrumental in helping to obtain grants and additional funding to promote, protect and maintain the Park. Members have also volunteered a good amount of their time to support and maintain Palomar Mountain State Park.

Other campgrounds in the area include Fry Creek and Observatory which is in Palomar Mountain State Park.

Directions:

From Highway 76, you can reach Palomar Mountain State Park via two roads: Rincon Springs (County Road S6) is a pretty drive, but rather steep and winding. County Road S7 (East Grade) from Lake Henshaw is longer, but not as tough and is easier for RVS or vehicles pulling trailers.
