The reservoir offers boating, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and fishing during the summer and some excellent ice fishing and snowmobiling during the winter. Visitors may access trails atop Grand Mesa for hiking and four wheeling in the summer, and cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Other outdoor recreation includes hiking, biking, OHVing, picnicking and wildlife viewing.

Aspen Grove, Pioneer and Oak Point are three other campgrounds at Vega State Park. Aspen Grove has 31 campsites and Oak Point has 39 campsites. Pioneer Point has 10 walk-in campsites and 5 rustic cabins.

Kind of a “destination campground” as it is a 30 minute climb from Collbran. Pretty drive, with lots of cool rock formations on the way. Not a lot of shade at campsites ( some have covered tables, others do not). Visited July 15-18 , 2018, and reservoir was quite low. Beautiful views, sunrises, etc. if you just want to unwind and chill out. Lots of folks with jet skis, kayaks, and ATVs. It would be great if you could rent such things there— maybe in Collbran?
