Steer Creek campground offers a nice place to kick back and enjoy nature among a beautiful ponderosa forest. The first-come, first-served campground has 23 campsites and is located in the southeast corner of the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. There’s also a nice corral with 8 stalls available if you want to bring your horse along for the campout.

Steer Creek campground has potable/drinking water, and vault toilets. Each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate. Our favorite campsites are: 2, 5, 7, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22.

Steer Creek – Area Recreation

The campground offers a great basecamp to explore the Sandhills. Outdoor activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, OHV riding, picnicking and wildlife viewing. You can also do some fishing and kayaking on the nearby Niobrara River. The Bluejay Trail (1-mile nature look), can be accessed from the campground.

You may also like Lake Minatare State Recreation Area. Bessey Recreation Complex is also a nice stop over if you’re headed through central Nebraska.
