El Vado Lake State Park – Area Recreation

Located at about 7,200 feet in elevation in New Mexico’s northern mountains, the Park offers a fantastic opportunity to view bald eagles, red-tail hawks, ospreys and other migrating birds during the winter. During the summer, it’s also a popular destination to enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, scuba diving, water-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, hunting and wildlife viewing.  A 5.5-mile scenic trail along the Rio Chama connects El Vado with nearby Heron Lake and is a nice hike year round (snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the winter).

Heron Lake State Park is another nice facility to consider. It has 114 developed campsites along Heron Lake.

  1. Was looking to get away for the city for a while I went July 27 through the 29th. Two weeks before I went I went on Google and saw that the leak was really low I called the Ranger and told him that I wanted to go swimming he move my campsite and there is just no way I would ever get into that water it was so low that There were a bunch of flies and it stunk. I’m sure at one point this was probably the nicest leak in New Mexico but I would recommend not going anytime soon until it fills up!
