Legend of Hungry Mother

Legend has it that when the Native Americans destroyed several settlements on the New River, Molly Marley and her small child were among the survivors taken to the raiders’ base. They eventually escaped, wandering through the wilderness eating berries. Molly finally collapsed, and her child wandered down a creek looking for help. The only words the child could utter were “Hungry Mother.”  Today that mountain is Molly’s Knob, and the stream is Hungry Mother Creek.

We spent 5 nights here around the 4th of July, had a great time. Camp Burson was a good find. Great swimming lake, plenty to do in the area. Campground was crowded, yet quiet during our stay. I need to get back again soon.

Loved cabin # 12! Very clean! Loved the journal.

  3. Donna Dobbins says:

Great state park. Lots of activities. Hiking is good. Beach by the lake is nice. Would stay again. Private showers with plenty of hot water. Wi fi very spotty. AT&T has no service.
