  1. Dave Bachmann says:

I just stayed at the Group site at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort campground with my wife and two children. There is a reason why recreation.gov provides exactly zero pictures of the Group site while providing pictures of all of the other 70 sites in the campground. That’s because the Group site is not a nice place to stay, which in turn makes it not photogenic. It’s a more or less a large gravel lot fringed with tall grass with a fire ring in the middle and four picnic tables strewn about, all covered with peeling green paint. There is also a vault toilet. Yes, it is right next to the Sol Duc River, and yes our view of the stars was incredible but that’s only because there are no trees at the site, which means absolutely no shade from sunrise to sunset, despite recreation.gov’s claim that it is shaded. We ended up cancelling our second night at the Group site to get a first-come-first-serve site in Loop B, which was wonderful and well worth the pain of breaking down camp and putting it up again. Sol Duc is a beautiful park with friendly staff at the resort store, and I won’t hesitate to go there again, but please beware of the Group site and do not assume that it looks anything like the other Sol Duc sites you see online because it does not.
