All California National Forests Closed

Update – September 15, 2021

All but five of California’s national forests — previously closed under an emergency order issued in late August — will reopen two days early, officials said Tuesday.

The closure order will end at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday (September 15), two days before Friday’s original end date, according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Region.

Forest-wide closures will remain in place until midnight Sept. 22 for the Los Padres, Angeles, San Bernardino and Cleveland national forests in Southern California because of “weather and fire factors,” and a temporary strain on firefighting resources battling blazes in other areas of the state, the Forest Service said.

In addition, the El Dorado National Forest in Northern California will stay closed until Sept. 30, the Forest Service said.

As of August 31 (at 11:59 p.m.) all California National Forests are closed through at least September 17th, 2021. The closure is to “better provide public & firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions.”

This includes all trails, campgrounds, off-highway roads, waterways and other public areas. Campers with reservations, holders of trail permits and/or other recreational permits will receive a refund from the issuing agency.

More information is available at the U. S. Forest Service website. You can also visit the various National Forest Service websites for more information.
