Mckinley Lake Cabin Chugach National Forest Alaska

Mckinley Lake Cabin Overview

Located on the peaceful northwest shore of McKinley Lake in Alaska’s Chugach National Forest, McKinley Lake Cabin offers a true backcountry retreat surrounded by towering spruce and hemlock forests, rugged mountains, and pristine wilderness. This remote public-use cabin is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude, exceptional fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, and hunting in one of Alaska’s most scenic landscapes. Accessible only by a 2.25-mile hike, canoe, or floatplane, the cabin provides an authentic wilderness experience far from roads and modern conveniences.

The rustic 16-by-20-foot cabin comfortably sleeps up to six guests on wooden bunks and includes a wood stove for heat, a table with benches, basic hand tools, a rainwater catchment barrel, and an outdoor pit toilet. There is no electricity, running water, or firewood provided, so visitors should arrive fully prepared with food, drinking water, cooking equipment, sleeping gear, and emergency supplies. Guests are expected to pack out all trash and leave the cabin clean for the next visitors.

Outdoor recreation is the highlight of any stay at McKinley Lake Cabin. The nearby McKinley Trail leads hikers through lush forests to the historic Lucky Strike Mine, while the Pipeline Lakes Trail offers additional opportunities to explore muskeg meadows and alpine scenery. Anglers can fish for cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, coho salmon, and sockeye salmon in McKinley Lake and its surrounding streams. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area, with frequent sightings of moose, Sitka black-tailed deer, loons, waterfowl, and both black and brown bears, making proper bear awareness essential.
