Calkins Flat Dispersed Campground offers free camping next to the Wild & Scenic Upper Kern River about 15 miles north of Kernville.  There are about 7-10 primitive camping areas that can accommodate tents trailers and RVs. Some sites are walk-to. All camping must be at least 25 feet from the river’s edge.

The dispersed camping area has a vault toilet and trash collection. There is no water or campsite tables available.

Calkins Flat – Area Recreation

Outdoor recreation in the area includes rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.  Wildlife viewing is also nice here.  Lake Isabella is also about 9 miles away and offers a variety of water sports including water-skiing, sail-boarding, fishing, swimming and other activities.

Other campgrounds in the area include Fairview, Limestone and Chamise Flat (dispersed).
