Colonel Allensworth State Park Overview
Colonel Allensworth State Park campground (the John L. Whitehead Jr. Campground) has 15 developed campsites and about 100 tent sites in an open field. The park is located next to the historic town of Allensworth.
The campground is open year round. Amenities include potable (drinking) water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection and a dump station. Each of the developed campsites also have a paved parking spur, table, shade structure, fire ring and grill. The campsites pads and interior roads are paved. Cell service is fair in the area.
Colonel Allensworth State Park – Area Recreation
In 1908 a group of African Americans led by Colonel Allen Allensworth founded a town in the southern San Joaquin Valley where Blacks could live free from discrimination. The town of Allensworth enjoyed great success as an independent and self-sufficient colony. Today the town site is an historic park and consists of several restored & reconstructed buildings including a schoolhouse, Baptist church, various businesses, homes, a hotel, library and other structures.
Tule Campground is about 160 miles away and has 104 campsites along the shore of Success Lake.

Can anyone get married at the church there and have a small picnic type reception at this campsite?

We’re not sure if you can have weddings at the Baptist church at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, but it wounds like a great idea. I recommend you call the park directly to find out: 661 849-3433
Is there cell phone coverage?

Yes, there is cell phone coverage at Colonel Allensworth State Park.
Great stopover location, but bring water as the water is often under a “Boil Before Drinking.” Look for notification about this on the bulletin board at the entry to the campground.
There are 15 campsites, not 115!!
Thanks for catching that Anne! You’re right – there are only 15 developed campsites. There is room for tent camping (about 100) in an open field but we corrected our info to reflect the ’15’ developed sites.
