Headquarters Campground Sequoia National Forest California

Headquarters Overview

Headquarters 038

Headquarters campground has 44 campsites along the banks of the Upper Kern River and about 1 mile north of Kernville. There are several campsites along the river and many have shade from a variety of trees. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and small RVs. There are no hookups. Campsites 39-41 are ‘walk to’ sites and sites 2 and 31 have a Yurt. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring, grate and paved parking pad. Amenities include drinking water and vault toilets.

The town of Kernville has many shops, restaurants, bars, a grocery store, gas stations and a nice park along the banks of the Kern River. The campground is also about 50 miles south of a large stand of giant Sequoia Trees – definitely worth a drive up to see.

Headquarters – Area Recreation

Outdoor recreation in the area includes rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.  Wildlife viewing is also nice here. Fishing is extremely popular and the golden trout is highly sought after for catch and release fishing by fly fishermen.  Lake Isabella is also just 5 miles away and offers a variety of water sports including water-skiing, sail-boarding, fishing, swimming and other activities.

The other 5 Upper Kern River campgrounds are: Limestone, Fairview, Gold Ledge, Hospital Flat and Camp Three. Halfway Group campground is also nearby.

One Comment on “Headquarters”

  1. Gilda Cook says:

We stayed their last year for 3 days had a great time wonderful host. So on may12 of this year(2019) we went their to check out the river, the Headquarters campsite wasn’t busy at all. But we were charged $28.00 for being their for two hours. I feel the charge was wrong because we were only sightseeing and enjoying the water for a short time.
