Horse Campground Plumas National Forest California

Horse Overview

Horse Campground has 10 spacious equestrian campsites and is located on the eastern shore of Little Grass Valley Reservoir in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. This campground can accommodate RV, trailer, and tent camping. The parking spurs at each site range from 24ft-50ft. Each site can accommodate up to 6 guests as well as 2 vehicles. Many pine and fir trees surround the sites that provide plenty of shade for you and your pets. However, bears live in the area so it is important to store and dispose of belongings the right way. Also, there is no cell service. Horse Campground is open from late June until early September.

Amenities at this campground are lantern and hitching posts, picnic tables, campfire rings, fire pits, as well as grills. In addition, there are vault toilets, seasonal trash service, and drinking water. An on-site host may be available. The closest dump stations are Little Beaver Campground (2mi south) and Pioneer RV Park (30mi north).

Horse – Area & Recreation

There are many fun activities at this campground and in the area. The Little Grass Valley Reservoir allows for water sports such as fishing, swimming, boating, as well as water skiing. A variety of trout and kokanee salmon live in the lake. During winter time, snowmobiling is very popular in the area as well.

The Lakeshore Trail, which loops 14.5 miles around the lake, is available for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The trail connects to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which stretches from 2,650 miles from Canada to Mexico, across three states. A variety of day hikes can be done on portions of the trail. Also, about 12 miles northeast of the lake lies a small, natural lily pond, called Fowler Lake. This site is perfect for day hikes and picnics.

Other campgrounds in the area include Red Feather, Little Beaver, Peninsula Tent, as well as Wyandotte.
