Lone Pine Campground Inyo National Forest California

Lone Pine Overview

Lone Pine Campground 014

Lone Pine campground has 43 campsites and is located next to a babbling creek in the eastern Sierra mountain range.  It’s a popular basecamp to do some fishing, backpacking and hiking.  Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs.  Campsites 38-42 are tent only (walk-to, about 30-50 feet for parking area). It also has and one group site (#43) that can have up to 15 people (tent only). There are 28 reservable campsites and the rest are first-come, first-serve. Campsite #18 is the only pull-through site in the campground.

The campground is open year round, but no services (trash collection / toilets are available in the winter season (November through March). Campground amenities include vault toilets and trash collection. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring, grill and food storage locker. Firewood is also available for sale at the campground. Cell service is good in the area.

Lone Pine – Area Recreation

Although at a relatively high altitude, the area does get rather warm in the summer. The campground is located off Whitney Portal road, about 7 miles from the Mt. Whitney trailhead and 6 miles from the town of Lone Pine.  The views of the Sierras are incredible here and there’s an abundance of fishing and hiking opportunities nearby.

Whitey Portal Campground is located up the road, about 6 miles away.

Phone number for reservations is incorrect, 760-xxx-xxxx. This is my private number. Please see that this is corrected. Thank you.

    • Hi Caroline,

Thank you for pointing that out. We have made the correction to the Lone Pine campground page. The Lone Pine campground information # is: 760 937-6070

  4. Is there a campsite by the creek.

    • Hi Lochlan,
There are actually no campsites right next to the creek at Lone Pine campground, but the closet ones are 1, 3, 13, 14, 17 and 20. You can click on the Campground Map button to get an idea of where the campsites are in relation to the creek.

  5. Sharon Gregory says:

Are the bathrooms flushing toilets an running water for washing hands?

    • Hi Sharon,
The bathrooms at Lone Pine campgrounds are vault/pit toilets. The bathrooms do not have running water, but there are water spigots located at a few locations throughout the campground.

  6. Sophia M says:

Site 15 and 39 no longer seem to be on the campground map on Recreation.gov. Do you know if they are first come/first serve (can’t be reserved)? Or just out of service?

    • Hi Sophia,
      Yes, campsites #15 and #39 exist and they are first-come, first-serve. Lone Pine Campground actually has 15 first-come, first-serve campsites including: 5, 7, 9, 15, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35 and 39.

  7. Sophia M says:

Good option and way quieter than the Whitney Portal campground located further up the road. There was potable water … even though the Forest Service webpage says there is not. Friendly camp host. We stayed in Site 12 and there was plenty of space for several tents. Driveway for the site was a little broken up and had a very minimal slope, but nothing significant. Also, this site has a nice new picnic table. Many of the sites had badly warped and nearly unfunctional picnic tables.
