Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park – Elk Prairie Overview
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park – Elk Prairie campground has 76 single-family (mixed use) campsites located among a forest of old-growth Redwood trees and also overlooks a nice open prairie. The sites are good for tents, trailers and RVS (up to 27 feet). Some campsites have sun, but most are shaded. Elk Prairie campground has drinking water, flush toilets and showers. Each campsite has a table, food locker, fire ring and grill. Cabins, hike/bike and primitive camping are also available here.
Gold Bluffs Beach is another campground at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and it has 26 campsites. You may also like Sue-Meg State Park.
Area Recreation & Activities
The Park was established in the early 1920s as a sanctuary of old growth coastal Redwood. The Park offers great opportunities to hike and explore the ancient Redwood forest and 10 miles of sandy coastline. In addition, there is a visitor center, nature store and campground at the Park. There is also an abundance of wildlife throughout the park including bear, elk, deer, coyote, mountain lion, bobcat and over 260 species of birds. The Park is designated as a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Preserve.

I just stayed at the campground in May of 2023. I did an exhaustive evaluation of the sites. My criteria are that I have to fit my 25-foot RV in and that it’s level enough to get my RV to level. Also that it’s private (no close neighbors), not next to a restroom (I have my own and don’t want a lot of foot traffic), and it’s scenic. So here’s what I think: Good sites [10, 11, 13, 24, 26, 28, 39, 41, 44, 47,70]. Great sites [49, 62, 64, 74, 75, 76]. The best site [54]. All that said, this is one of the most beautiful campgrounds in California, and the surrounding area is amazing with it’s redwood forests. You just can’t go wrong here.
Also, another note: sites 71, 72, 73 are located near the entrance (not private at all) and have no tree or bush cover. But, and this is a big but, they are at the edge of a large grassy field where the elk and deer congregate. The elk literally filled up their campsites one evening. I’m sure it was a real thrill. Sites 74, 75, and 76 are more private but also right at the edge of the field, so plenty of good wildlife viewing opportunities.
Hi Sarah! Super helpful information, thanks! I’ll be there in a couple weeks. I noticed you recommended some sites that fit your criteria based on your examination but show a pad length of less than 25ft (#13 says 22ft, #24 says 18ft, for example). Do you find the online pad length to be inaccurate (since it sounds like you think you could fit a 25ft RV at site #24)? I’m curious because I just noticed the site I reserved (#78) says pad length of 18ft and my camper van is just shy of 20ft, so now I’m wondering if it will fit there… and if they’re super strict about enforcing the different individual site vehicle lengths. I may want to switch anyway just based on your recommendations for level ground. Thanks for any helpful insights you can share!
