Lake Fork (Rio Grande NF) Overview

Lake Fork Campground (Rio Grande National Forest) is next to the Conejos River and has 19 campsites set among Aspen and conifers. Some of of the campsites overlook the river. Campers will need to traverse an 18-mile gravel road to reach the campground.

The campground is generally open late May to early September. Amenities include potable (drinking) water, and vault toilets. Trash collection not provided (please pack in/out all trash). Firewood is available to purchase from the camp host.  Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a parking spur (up to 45 feet), table, fire ring and grill.  Cell service is not available in the area.

Lake Fork Campground – Area Recreation and Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, picnicking, stargazing and wildlife viewing.

A variety of wildlife makes its home in the area, including black bears, deer and marmots. Wildflowers dot the region, creating colorful landscapes for photography enthusiasts.

The campground is also convenient to several trails, such as Lake Fork to Big Lake and Conejos Peak to Blue Lake.

The Conejos River is a Gold Medal River, meaning it offers the greatest potential for trophy trout fishing. Rainbow and brown trout are the most common species in the river.

Mix Lake Campground is also in the area (Platoro Valley). It offers 22 first-come, first-serve campsites.
