May Queen Campground has 27 campsites along a creek and is at the far western end of Turquoise Lake in a shaded lodgepole pine forest. The spacious sites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Six of the sites are first-come, first-serve, but the rest are reservable. Campsites 1 to 8 are ‘walk to’ sites.
Campground amenities include drinking water (hand pump), vault toilets and trash collection. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate. A firewood vendor is also on site.
The campground offers easy access to boating and fishing on Turquoise Lake. Hikers will like the 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail. Other activities include mountain biking, backpacking, swimming, picnicking, hunting, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. The historic mining town of Leadville is also worth a visit!
You may also like Fourmile or Horseshoe campgrounds. Other campgrounds in the area include Baby Doe, Tabor, Father Dyer, Printer Boy, Belle of Colorado, Molly Brown, Silver Dollar, Matchless and Sugar Loafin’.
