American Legion State Forest Austin F. Hawes Overview
American Legion State Forest Austin F. Hawes campground has 29 campsites and 6 cabins in a wooded setting and next to the Farmington River. Sites 7, 8, 9, 24, 26 and 27 are cabins.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush and vault toilets, showers, and a sanitation dump station. Firewood and ice are also for sale at the campground.
The camping season begins in mid-April and usually runs through Labor Day weekend. Youth group camping is also available at both American Legion and Peoples State Forests. A seasonally-operated museum, picnic shelters, and picnic tables are also available.
American Legion State Forest Austin F. Hawes – Area Recreation
Outdoor recreation in the 3,900 acre American Legion and People’s State Forest includes biking, hiking, hunting, climbing, wildlife viewing, as well as fishing, kayaking, canoeing and tubing on the West Branch of the Farmington River (designated as a Wild & Scenic River).
Black Rock State Park is has another nice campground you may want to check out. It’s about 30 miles south of Austin Hawes Campground via Highway 8.

Trying to make a reservation at Austin Hawes campground for 9/19/17 for 2 nights. Is the campground still open? One site says closed and another say open through Columbus day????

Typically Austin Hawes campground (American Legion State Forest) is open mid April through Labor Day weekend.
May I make a Rez for site 001 on Saturday June 16th? It’s available but there’s a two night minimum (and reserved on adjoining days)

Just a quick note. In 2017 and 2018 Connecticut is closing many state park campgrounds after Labor Day weekend because of state budget issues.
I noticed the reservation site (reserveamerica) says site numbers have changed. Are your photos of the old numbers or new ones.

Actually there are 25 campsites and 7 cabins. A few more sites were converted to cabins (so we do need new photos of those). Sites 7, 8, 9, 24, 25, 26 and 27 are cabins.
Good Evening- we booked a 2 night stay (5/31-06/02) at a Cabin. What size are the beds (for sheets/padding, etc)?

The beds are double and twin.
Do the campsites photos here represent the sites as they are currently (March 2026) numbered or as they were prior to the campground renumbering? I like the look of site 19, but when I go to book, reserveamerica has a note that site 19 was formerly site 17 … so I don’t know what site I’m actually booking!! Help?

Thanks for pointing that out. The campground did not notify us of the renumbering. I have updated the campsite numbers/photos to match (although the site post # in the photo won’t). We are planning to reshoot the campground, and many others in Connecticut this fall. Our old pic of site #19 is now site #21 (listed on our web page). Hope this helps!
