Calamus SRA Homestead Knolls Overview

Calamus SRA Homestead Knolls has 83 spacious campsites with electric hookups and si located on the north shore of Calamus Reservoir.

Calamus State Recreation Area is a large and scenic outdoor destination in the heart of Nebraska’s Sandhills, about 6–7 miles northwest of Burwell. Centered around the approximately 5,123-acre Calamus Reservoir, the recreation area encompasses roughly 11,720 acres of rolling prairie, native grasses, shoreline and waterways. It is one of Nebraska’s popular destinations for camping, boating, fishing and enjoying the wide-open scenery of the Sandhills.

Homestead Knolls Campground is open year round. Amenities include potable (drinking) water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection (dumpsters), and an RV dump station at Little York Point. There is also a boat ramp, boat trailer lot, fish-cleaning station, dock, day-use/picnic areas. Cell service is fair in the area.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. In addition to electric hookups, each site has a paved parking spur, table, fire ring and grill.

Calamus SRA Homestead Knolls – Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes boating, fishing, water sports, swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, hiking, biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.

The reservoir has multiple boat ramps and provides access to the Calamus River. Visitors can also explore the Calamus State Fish Hatchery, located below the dam.

Nearby Burwell provides campers with convenient access to groceries, fuel, restaurants and other supplies. Burwell is also well known for hosting Nebraska’s Big Rodeo, held annually in July. Concession areas around Calamus Reservoir offer seasonal services such as snacks, groceries, bait, boat rentals and other supplies.

Other campgrounds next to the reservoir include Valley View Flat and Hannamon Bayou.
