Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park Campground Nevada

Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park Overview

Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park Berlin Historic Structure

Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is located on the western slope of central Nevada’s Shoshone mountain range. The campground has 14 well-spaced campsites and is about 1.5 miles away from the preserved ghost town of Berlin (1890s). You can also see the largest known remains of Ichthyosaurs, an ancient marine reptile that swam in a warm ocean that covered central Nevada 225 million years ago.

The campground is open year-round. Amenities include numerous water spigots (water available mid-April through October), very clean restrooms (flush toilets), trash collection and a dump station. A picnic / day use area is also over by the Fossil House. Cell service is not available in the area.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (25 to 65 feet). Each site also has a nice shade shelter over the table, fire ring and BBQ. No hookups.  There are some sites better suited for tents (not too level and rather short) but others are good for larger rigs and quite level.  Sites 5-7 are long pull-thru but not particularly level.

Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park – Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation includes touring the ghost town, checking out the dinosaur remains over at the Fossil House, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail riding, stargazing and picnicking. Wildlife viewing can also be good. The trail to the fossil shelter is between sites 8 and 9 and Berlin ghost town is 2 miles away.

The town of Berlin sprang up in 1896, when gold veins were discovered nearby.

Today, visitors can explore various structures including the ore mill, ore stamps and mercury float tables. Other buildings still standing include homes, blacksmith shop, stage coach shop and stable, machine shop, and assay office. Some buildings are open to enter, while others offer interior views of their contents through the windows.

The American Discovery Trail (6,800+ miles, including 500 miles in Nevada) also has a trailhead from the park.

You might also be interested in Lahontan SRA (about 125 miles away) or Walker River SRA (about 147 miles away).
