Horseshoe Bend (OR) Campground Umpqua National Forest Oregon
Horseshoe Bend (OR) Overview
Horseshoe Bend Campground has 25 reservable campsites in a forestec area along Oregon’s North Umpqua River in the Umpqua National Forest. The sites have heavy shade, so mornings stay cool even in warm weather. Several campsites sit right along the river.
The seasonal campground is usually open from early May through late September. Early reservations are recommended for summer stays, especially on weekends and holidays. During the operating season, the campground provides drinking water, flush toilets and trash collection (dumpsters). Firewood is also available to purchase from the camp host. Bring insect repellent, especially in late spring and early summer. Cell service is poor throughout the canyon.
Some close by RV dump stations include Timber River RV Park (26mi west), Love’s Truck Stop (53mi west), Douglas County Fairgrounds RV Park (50mi west), and Diamond Lake Campground (35mi east).
Campsites are suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs up to about 35ft long. Each site includes a paved parking spur, picnic table, fire ring and grill. Hookups are not available.
Horseshoe Bend Campground (OR) – Area & Recreation
The North Umpqua River is the campground’s main draw. It has a strong reputation for fly fishing, especially for wild steelhead. People also come here to raft, kayak, swim, and watch wildlife. A whitewater boat launch sits near the campground entrance. The surrounding area also offers hiking trails, waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and day trips. Crater Lake National Park is about an hour farther east. Horseshoe Bend works well as a base for exploring southern Oregon.
The Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway offers some of the area’s best day-use attractions, especially its waterfalls. Toketee Falls sits a short drive from the campground and ranks among Oregon’s most photographed waterfalls. Watson Falls also deserves a stop. It plunges nearly 300 feet through lush old-growth forest and ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the state. Clearwater Falls offers an easy walk to a broad, scenic cascade surrounded by tall evergreens. Susan Creek Falls is another favorite, with a moderate hike through recovering forest to a beautiful 50-foot waterfall. The Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway itself is also a nice drive. It winds through dense forest, mountain rivers, lava flows, and many picnic areas and overlooks.
Several other campgrounds line the North Umpqua River. Susan Creek Campground sits farther downstream and gives you access to Susan Creek Falls. Clearwater Falls Campground offers a smaller and quieter stay beside the Clearwater River. Toketee Lake Campground, Diamond Lake Campground, as well as Broken Arrow Campground are all great options too.
