Poison Butte (OR) Overview

Poison Butte Campground 003

Poison Butte Campground has 5 first-come first-serve campsites located along the scenic Lower Crooked River. The BLM managed campground is open year-round; reservations not accepted.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site has a table, fire ring and grill.

Amenities include vault toilets and trash receptacles. Potable water is available during the warmer spring and summer months at the nearby Big Bend Campground, 0.9 miles south on State HIghway 27. Cell service is not available in the area. A day use / picnic area is also located at the campground.

Poison Butte Campground is one of several BLM campgrounds along the Crooked Wild and Scenic River. You might also like Stillwater, Lone Pine, Palisades, Chimney Rock, Big Bend, Post Pile, Cobble Rock or Castle Rock campgrounds.

Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, stargazing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The Prineville Reservoir is also nearby and is a popular area for boating, water sports and fishing. Hike the short riverside trail to the single, old growth Ponderosa pine tree, a relative rarity in the Crooked River canyon.
