Horsethief Lake Black Hills National Forest Overview

Horsethief Lake campground is located on the shores of Horsethief Lake in a forest of beautiful evergreen pine trees. The campground has 36 campsites and is also the closest campground to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Campsites 29-32 are walk-to (tent only) sites and the others can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs.

The campsites accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Some of the sites are tent only. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill. The campground has drinking water and vault toilets. Cell service is poor in the area.

Horsethief Lake – Area Recreation

Black Hills National Forests offers a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities during all seasons. Visitors can enjoy hiking, climbing, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, OHVing and wildlife viewing. Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Also, Mount Rushmore National Monument is just 2 miles from the campground.

Bismarck Lake and Custer State Park are two other campgrounds in the area. You may also like Iron Creek Horse Camp, Dutchman CampgroundĀ  or Sheridan Lake Campground.

    Do you have cabins to rent? We are coming in April and will just be driving our van. Thank you.

      Horsethief Lake campground only has campsites available (no cabins). You can click on the ‘Make A Reservation’ button to check availability, pricing and make a reservation.

    Are you allowed to camp at Horsethief Lake prior to the Peak Season opening date of May 19th 2021? If so, is it first come first serve or are reservations required in the off season? We’re interested in coming around May 2nd.
