Canyonlands National Park Needles District Group Campsites Overview
Needles District Group Sites include 3 different areas within Canyonlands National Park Needles District. All group sites are best suited for tent camping. Small, self-contained campers and RVs (up to 24 feet) are also okay. RVs over 25 feet will have difficulty accessing these sites.
The Needles District is 1.25 hours driving time from Monticello, Utah, and 1.5 hours from Moab, Utah, and sits at an elevation of approximately 4,900 feet.
The group sites are open year-round with reservations accepted mid March to mid November.
Dutch Oven Group Site
The Dutch Oven Group Site is located within Needles District Campground and near the Salt Flat Trailhead parking area. It can accommodate up to 50 people and 10 vehicles (up to 25 feet). The group site has potable (drinking) water, restrooms with flush toilets, picnic tables, fire rings and large areas to pitch a tent. The parking area (paved) is next to the tent camping area. A camp host is also located next to the group site.
Split Top Group Site
This group site is located over by the Cave Spring Trailhead about 2.2 miles from the Visitor Center. It can accommodate up to 15 people and 3 vehicles (up to 20 feet). Split Top Group Site has potable (drinking) water, restrooms vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings and large areas to pitch a tent. The parking area (gravel) is next to the tent camping area.
The Cave Spring Trail 1/2 mile loop trail also meanders by the cowboy camp, springs and rock markings left by prehistoric people.
Wooden Shoe Group Site
Wooden Shoe Group site is near the Wooden Shoe Overlook and located just off Squaw Flat Road (1/4 mile from Highway 211). It can accommodate up to 25 people and 5 vehicles (up to 25 feet). The group site has potable (drinking) water, vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings and large areas to pitch a tent. The parking areas (gravel) are next to the tent camping area and has parking for about 8 vehicles.
Single-family campsites are also available at the Needles District Campground. Other campgrounds (just outside the park entrance) include Needles Outpost, Hamburger Rock and Indian Creek Falls Group.
Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation near the Needles District Group Sites include hiking, backpacking, OHV trail riding, mountain biking, canyoneering, rock climbing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Stargazing is also spectacular in this area.
