Carson National Forest New Mexico
Carson National Forest Overview
Carson National Forest is a spectacular 1.5-million-acre national forest located in northern New Mexico. Stretching across portions of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, San Juan Mountains, and the San Juan Basin, the forest features an impressive range of landscapes, from high-desert mesas and deep river canyons to alpine forests and rugged mountain peaks. Elevations range from approximately 6,000 feet to more than 13,000 feet, including Wheeler Peak, the highest mountain in New Mexico.
Known for its scenic beauty and diverse ecosystems, Carson National Forest offers year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving during the warmer months. In winter, the forest becomes a destination for skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and other snow sports. More than 330 miles of trails wind through the forest, providing access to wilderness areas, mountain lakes, meadows, and panoramic viewpoints.
The forest contains several designated wilderness areas and protects important watersheds, rivers, and wildlife habitat. Trout-filled streams, high mountain lakes, and the dramatic Rio Grande Gorge contribute to its popularity among anglers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The region is also rich in cultural history, with connections to Native American communities, Spanish settlers, and early frontier explorers.
Camping is one of the most popular activities in Carson National Forest. The forest offers numerous developed campgrounds as well as dispersed camping opportunities, allowing visitors to experience everything from family-friendly campgrounds to remote backcountry settings.
