Chippewa National Forest Minnesota

Chippewa National Forest Overview

Chippewa National Forest is located in north-central Minnesota and covers more than 660,000 acres of forests, lakes, wetlands, and rivers. Established in 1908 as the first national forest east of the Mississippi River, it is renowned for its vast water resources, including more than 1,300 lakes, 900 miles of streams, and approximately 400,000 acres of wetlands. The forest lies within the traditional homeland of the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people and shares a close connection with the nearby Leech Lake Reservation.

The landscape is characterized by towering red and white pines, mixed hardwood forests, pristine lakes, and abundant wildlife. The forest supports one of the highest concentrations of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 states and provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, boating, hiking, biking, and paddling. Visitors can also explore scenic drives, historic Civilian Conservation Corps sites, and the famous Lost Forty, a rare stand of old-growth forest that escaped logging due to a historic surveying error.

Camping is one of the forest’s most popular activities, with approximately 19 developed campgrounds ranging from lakeside family campgrounds to more primitive and dispersed camping opportunities. Campgrounds are situated along many of the forest’s lakes and waterways, offering easy access to fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking.
