Cibola National Forest and Grasslands New Mexico

Cibola National Forest and Grasslands Overview

Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands encompasses nearly 1.9 million acres of diverse public lands stretching across central New Mexico and into portions of Texas and Oklahoma. The area includes four ranger districts, eight major mountain ranges, four designated wilderness areas, and four national grasslands, creating a remarkable mix of alpine forests, rugged mountains, high-desert landscapes, and sweeping prairie ecosystems. Elevations range from approximately 2,000 feet on the grasslands to more than 11,300 feet atop Mount Taylor.

Camping opportunities are plentiful throughout the forest, ranging from developed campgrounds to dispersed backcountry sites. Visitors can choose from approximately 16 campgrounds located across the various ranger districts and mountain ranges. Popular campgrounds include Coal Mine Campground near Mount Taylor, Capilla Peak Campground in the Manzano Mountains, and several smaller forest campgrounds that provide easy access to hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and wildlife habitat. Many sites accommodate both tent campers and RVs, though hookups are generally unavailable in most forest campgrounds.
