Flathead National Forest Montana

Flathead National Forest Overview

Flathead National Forest covers approximately 2.4 million acres in northwestern Montana. The forest stretches across a spectacular landscape of rugged mountains, dense evergreen forests, alpine meadows, clear rivers, and hundreds of lakes. It also surrounds the communities of Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Bigfork and Libby.

The forest lies in the heart of the northern Rocky Mountains and includes portions of the Swan, Whitefish, and Flathead mountain ranges. Elevations vary considerably, creating a diverse landscape that supports abundant wildlife and a wide range of recreational opportunities. The area is especially known for its mountain scenery and access to Flathead Lake, Hungry Horse Reservoir, Swan Lake, and numerous smaller alpine lakes.

Flathead National Forest has numerous developed campgrounds, as well as opportunities for dispersed camping in appropriate areas. Developed campgrounds range from small, rustic sites in heavily forested settings to larger facilities near lakes and reservoirs.

Flathead National Forest – Outdoor Recreation & Activities

The Forest offers year-round recreation. In summer, visitors come for hiking, camping, fishing, boating/rafting, swimming, mountain biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving. The forest contains an extensive network of trails, ranging from easy lakeside walks to demanding routes into high mountain country.

During winter, snow transforms the forest into a destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and winter wildlife viewing. Some roads and campgrounds close during the snowy season, so visitors should check current conditions before traveling.
