Indiana Dunes National Park Indiana

Indiana Dunes National Park Overview

Indiana Dunes National Park includes about 15,000 acres along the southern shore of Lake Michigan in northwestern Indiana. The park protects diverse landscapes, including towering sand dunes, sandy beaches, wetlands, forests, prairies, and oak savannas. It stretches for roughly 15 miles along the lake and features a unique combination of ecosystems that support hundreds of bird species, native plants, and wildlife.

Indiana Dunes National Park offers a wide range of recreational opportunities throughout the year. The park features more than 50 miles of hiking trails. Routes range from short nature walks to challenging dune hikes. Popular destinations include Cowles Bog, West Beach, and the Glenwood Dunes trail system.

Lake Michigan’s sandy shoreline and dunes also attracts visitors for swimming, sunbathing, beach combing, kayaking, sand sledding and beach combing. Other popular activities include biking, fishing and wildlife viewing. Snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are also popular winter activities when conditions permit.

Indiana Dunes National Park Camping

Dunewood is the only developed campground in the park and 67 reservable campsites. Fifty three of the sites are developed (no hookups) for tents, trailers and RVs (some with limited size). There are also 13 walk-to primitive campsites (sites 55-67). Campsites 1-34 are in the Mather Loop and sites 35-67 are in the Douglas Loop.
