Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit

Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit California

Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Overview

Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is a unique U.S. Forest Service management area that surrounds the iconic waters of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada. Established in 1973, the management unit encompasses approximately 155,000 acres of public land across California and Nevada and is dedicated to protecting Lake Tahoe’s world-famous water clarity, forests, wildlife habitat, and recreational resources. Unlike most national forests, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit focuses heavily on watershed protection, ecosystem restoration, recreation management, and preserving the environmental health of the entire Tahoe Basin.

Popular activities include hiking, mountain biking, boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing, cross-country skiing, and exploring portions of the renowned Tahoe Rim Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. The area also includes portions of the Desolation Wilderness and other protected backcountry landscapes.

The unit manages or oversees numerous campgrounds located along Lake Tahoe’s north, south, east, and west shores. Most campgrounds are open from mid-May through mid-October, while a few facilities operate year-round. Camping is generally limited to designated campgrounds and approved backcountry areas; dispersed camping is not permitted within the management unit.
