Modoc National Forest Overview

Modoc National Forest is a vast and remote wilderness covering more than 1.6 million acres in northeastern California. The forest is known for its remarkable diversity of landscapes, including volcanic plateaus, lava flows, alpine lakes, pine forests, wetlands, rugged canyons, and the scenic Warner Mountains.

The forest contains a variety of natural attractions, including the Medicine Lake Highlands, the South Warner Wilderness, and areas adjacent to Lava Beds National Monument. Visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, scenic drives, wildlife watching, and winter recreation. Numerous lakes, reservoirs, and streams provide excellent opportunities for fishing and water-based activities throughout the warmer months.

Camping is one of the forest’s most popular activities, with more than two dozen developed campgrounds as well as extensive dispersed camping opportunities.  Visitors can also choose from lakeside campgrounds, mountain forest settings, wilderness trailhead camps, and primitive high-desert locations.
