San Juan National Forest

San Juan National Forest Colorado

San Juan National Forest Overview

San Juan National Forest is one of Colorado’s most spectacular public lands, encompassing nearly 1.9 million acres in the southwestern part of the state. Stretching across the rugged San Juan Mountains, the forest features dramatic alpine peaks, deep river canyons, lush meadows, dense pine and aspen forests, and vast wilderness areas. Elevations range from approximately 5,000 feet to more than 14,000 feet, creating diverse ecosystems and breathtaking scenery.

Established in 1905, the forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and serves as a premier destination for outdoor recreation. Visitors can explore thousands of miles of trails, pristine mountain lakes, rushing rivers, historic mining districts, and some of Colorado’s most famous scenic drives. The forest surrounds gateway communities such as Durango, Silverton, Dolores, and Pagosa Springs, making it easily accessible for travelers seeking adventure in the Rocky Mountains.

San Juan National Forest Camping

Camping opportunities are abundant throughout the forest, with dozens of developed campgrounds located along rivers, reservoirs, and mountain valleys. Visitors can also enjoy dispersed camping in many areas, providing a more secluded backcountry experience. Popular camping destinations include Vallecito Reservoir, Jackson Lake, Molas Lake, and the South Mineral Creek area.
