Superior National Forest Minnesota
Superior National Forest Overview
Superior National Forest is a vast wilderness area in northeastern Minnesota, stretching from the shores of Lake Superior to the Canadian border. Covering more than three million acres, it is one of the most scenic and ecologically diverse national forests in the United States. The forest is known for its thousands of lakes, dense pine and spruce forests, rugged rocky landscapes, and abundant wildlife, including moose, black bears, wolves, bald eagles, and loons.
The forest is home to the renowned Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), a world-famous destination for canoeing, fishing, and wilderness camping. With over 1,000 lakes and hundreds of miles of canoe routes, the area offers a unique backcountry experience where visitors can explore pristine waterways and remote wilderness.
Superior National Forest Camping
The National Forest contains dozens of developed campgrounds located near lakes, rivers, and popular recreation areas. Many campsites accommodate tents and RVs and provide amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, drinking water, and boat access.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness features more than 2,000 designated backcountry campsites accessible primarily by canoe or hiking. These primitive sites provide a true wilderness experience and are available through a permit system during the main recreation season.
