Sutton Lake West Virginia

Sutton Lake Overview

Sutton Lake is a scenic reservoir located in the wooded hills of central West Virginia, just east of the town of Sutton. Created by the construction of Sutton Dam on the Elk River, the lake stretches approximately 14 miles and features nearly 40 miles of shoreline lined with forested hills, secluded coves, and abundant wildlife.

The 1,400-acre lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Visitors enjoy boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, and picnicking throughout the year. Anglers frequently target largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, muskie, walleye, and trout.

Camping is one of the lake’s biggest attractions. Several campgrounds are located around the shoreline, including Gerald Freeman Campground, which offers over 150 campsites with electric and full-hookup options, and Bakers Run Campground, a quieter campground nestled among forests and wildlife habitat. For a more rustic experience, Bee Run Campground provides primitive campsites near the marina, swimming beach, and hiking trails.
