Crystal Cove State Park – Deer Canyon Campground California

Crystal Cove State Park – Deer Canyon Overview

Crystal Cove State Park Deer Canyon 004

Crystal Cove State Park – Deer Canyon campground is one of three backcountry/primitive campgrounds in the park and is located on the Red Tail Ridge Trail about 3 miles from the parking lot.

There are approximately 5 primitive campsites and most have great views of the distant ocean and surrounding hills. Each site has has a decent area to pitch a tent or two, and most also have a picnic table.  Campers must bring all of their gear, water and food, and pack everything back out.  Campfires and pets are not allowed. A vault toilet is also located at the campground.

The campground provides easy access to miles of hiking and excellent mountain biking trails. Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer, bobcat, coyote, pheasant, quail, hawks, and a variety of other creatures. There’s also the occasional rattlesnake (usually appearing from May through October).  You can also hike back down to beautiful Moro Beach (access via a tunnel under the Pacific Coast Highway), and enjoy swimming, surfing, snorkeling, beach combing and sunbathing. There’s also some good marine wildlife viewing here too.

The two other backcountry / primitive campgrounds are Upper Moro and Lower Moro.  Moro campground is also located in the park (trailers and RVs only).  Crystal Cove State Park Historic District is also just a few miles up the coast.
