Capps Crossing Campground Eldorado National Forest California

As of September 8, 2025, the Capps Crossing Campground is closed due to the 2021 Caldor Fire damage. Recovery efforts are underway but there is no timeline established for the reopening.

Capps Crossing Overview

The Capps Crossing Campground is a unique, large-group campground that can accommodate up to 42 people. Individual campsites create a loop, forming the group site. When not reserved by a group, sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site can host up to 6 people and 1 vehicle. The group site fee includes 10 vehicles. Bringing more than 10 vehicles will require and extra fee that you can pay on site. The campground also allows pets for a daily fee. Cell service ranges from very poor to non-existent.

The campground is located in the Eldorado National Forest. The Eldorado National Forest is in the central part of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. It has plenty of cedar and fir trees that provide an ample amount of shade for the campsites. Also, the Cosumnes River runs through the campground. It provides a great opportunity for water activities like swimming, fishing, and even panning for gold. All sites can accommodate tents. In addition, sites 1, 6, and 7 can accommodate trailers and RVs with a max length of 40ft.

Amenities include vault toilets, picnic tables, campfire rings, as well as trash collection. There is no potable water or showers. You may purchase firewood locally, from the camp host, as well as gather dead and downed wood. The campground does not allow outside wood. You must burn all wood on-site. Bears also frequent the area so you must use bear-safe containers for food storage. The Sly Park Recreation Area (18mi west), Silver Fork Campground (25mi northeast), and Bear River Resort (30mi southeast) offer the closest dump stations for RVs.

Capps Crossing – Area Recreation and Activites

Visitors enjoy taking scenic drives to many overlooks in the area. Fishing, hiking, rock climbing, bird watching, and close proximity to OHV routes are some of the popular activities available. Also, you can drive 3hrs roundtrip to South Lake Tahoe or Sacramento for a day trip. San Francisco is also a drivable distance at around 3.5hrs one-way.

Other campgrounds you might like are Loon Lake, Zephyr Cove Resort, Acorn, or Camp Richardson Resort.
